rodacademy Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 What do you think is the most iconic Bass of the eighties? aria SB? Status? kubicki? You decide!! Quote
BassTractor Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 That's not even a question! Steinberger of course. No peers, no competition, no nothing. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 P basses but in garish colours with covered pole piece pickups. Bright Blue with white pickguard and pickups/knobs spring to mind. Quote
Lozz196 Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Soundwise Wal probably, but lookswise Steinberger all the way. Nothing says 80s as much as one of those. Quote
TheGreek Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 just about anything headless??? or some of those pointy headed ones??? Too hard to choose.. Quote
Muzz Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 In narrower circles, any of the Charvel/Jackson pointy-headed types are hugely 80s, as are Explorers, preferably in a glittery or stripy finish But yeah, overall I'd say Steinbergers and to a lesser extent Statii. Quote
BetaFunk Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 (edited) Steinberger - Original L Bass. P.S. I'm really waiting for someone to the say 'The 1994 xxxxx Bass'. You just know it's going to happen don't you. Edited August 28, 2013 by BetaFunk Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 That's the thing. Back in the eighties, I saw so many pointy bright basses when I went to metal gigs. On TV tho' it as all steineyes . (And the odd tabletop ) Quote
Grassie Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Nope, it has to be an Aria SB - strapped up right under the armpit, wrist at a painful angle, just ask Guy Pratt, John Taylor, the bloke from Haircut 100.... Quote
Green Alsatian Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 You're all wrong! It'll be something with Moog, Roland, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits or similar across the front it. Or if we're talking after 1983, a Yamaha DX7! Quote
witterth Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 everyone wanted a Status in the 80's I don't care what you say its just the way it was. Quote
Donnyboy Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Whatever it was it'd be headless for the '80's for mainstream stuff. Quote
iconic Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 anything headless....or "the broken head off on it...bass" as my 2 year refers to my Hohner Quote
Donnyboy Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Probably, but took a while to catch on!! Quote
TimR Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013
In narrower circles, any of the Charvel/Jackson pointy-headed types are hugely 80s, as are Explorers, preferably in a glittery or stripy finish But yeah, overall I'd say Steinbergers and to a lesser extent Statii.
Oh yes. I still have my Jackson/Charvel. I picked up a second had Aria a few years back for £90. It was a monster, completly unplayable. Cleaned the gunk off the frets, adjusted the truss rod, fixed the intonation, adjusted the pickup heights, polished the body. It was a beauty, sounded and played beautifully. Bargains are out there. BetaFunk Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013
....weren't Steinburgers a 70's design?
You won't see many 1970s ones. The 80s was most definitely the decade of the Steinberger. Quote
Gust0o Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 BC Rich? Charvel? Jackson? Kramer? Might be showing my metal roots! Quote
