MB1
MB1. Good Question ...Of which I also have no answer As Toyah once said "It's a mystery ?"
Fat Rich
I think it's because more of the body is in contact with the neck it's supposed to have more tone. Maybe more neck stability too, although I can't help thinking with a truss rod acting on a neck that's fixed on one side it's more to twist than a normal neck The main benefit is that no one will want to borrow your bass

4 Strings
Why are they considered so ugly though? There's no doubt they are, but is it because it's not what our conservative bass-player mind is programmed to see as acceptable? An Ampeg SVT amp is similarly ugly, but normally attracts a 'phwoar' type comment, highly acceptable. If Leo's original was a single cut (not in an tele way, but the way being discussed here) would we find them more acceptable?
4 Strings
Also, while my understanding about them regards extra stiffness/stability etc of the neck, would they balance better giving a bit of extra on the body end?
ras52
They also double as coffee tables.
Roland Rock
I think it's a tricky design to get right, as it's so unbalanced in form. There are some lovely ones. I agree that we're kind of conditioned to liking 'double cut' basses, and it's a difficult hump to get over ;-) I always thought its main purpose was neck stability

Kiwi
There are a few very nice looking single cuts out there...Fodera Beez Elite for example. A Telecaster is a single cut BTW...so is a Les Paul and a Gibson Byrdland...I've yet to hear guitarists moaning about how they look so bad. Roland Rock
Haha, yes the Thumb SC seems to be a really lazy design. Here is something beautiful IMO...

karlfer
Never tried one but they don't look two hand tapping friendly to me. Added to which, I really do think they would look a touch out of place in the gaffs we gig at. No offence to the gaffs, we are old gits and that is what we want to play.
Nope, you've lost me. I think the lower horn cutaway is a nice contrast. The balance of the curves is different to a double cutaway but not any worse than a Fender. What's the point of an upper cutaway any how? It doesn't serve a purpose.

waynepunkdude
There is one in the FS section that is the ugliest looking thing I've ever seen, it's up for thousands but it looks like a MDP reject.
TheGreek
Till recently I would have agreed with many of the comments but when I first saw mine in the flesh (timber??) I found it far more pleasing on the eye than I would have expected. The ACG Harlot SC is well weighted and balanced, the internals make all the right noises and the timber, though I accept that not everybody likes natural finishes, is a beautiful Amboyna burl which, if it were a painting would probably be considered a masterpiece. Check out the review I copied into the ACG porn thread about it's performance. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/140476-the-acg-thread/page__st__100 Myself, I can't understand why anybody would buy a P Bass, onlookers can't tell the difference between a £5,000 original to a £50 cheap and nasty copy. I also feel that with "Classic Fenders" you're getting a Volkswagen Beetle which pertains to be a Porsche - it just so isn't!! At least with the single cuts people have a fair idea that it is different and (usually) hand built. Horses and courses... Ghosts Over Japan
I would be interested to know how much it does affect the tone, I mean it's clearly going to affect the weight. I've always, Actually, hang on a second *Straps on bullet proof vest*, as I was saying, I've always been quite fond of singlecut basses.
