rodacademy
Ok so We have looked at some axes of that time but what about the Amps! Was Peavey the king back then?? Trace Elliot or Ampeg? You decide!
louisthebass
Trace Elliot definitely... . Shame it was so bloomin' heavy .
TheGreek
Also a big fan of Trace Elliott but I can't afford the Chiropractor's bill anymore... There were a lot of Mesa Boogie fans around that time too - the amps still hold their value as far as I can see - there must be a good reason..anybody??? Roland Rock
Lots of solid state HH and Carlsboro around too.
Grand Wazoo
Another Trace fan here, this was my fav combo, I only had to let it go because I couldn't lift it anymore, it was just too heavy

Donnyboy
Carlsbro cobra, I got rid of an Orange valve head and a 4x12 Sound City cab to get it. Why?
Roger2611
Trace Elliot twin valve was my weapon of choice.....they are not too heavy especially if you buy a Mesa Boogie 1516 cab to run with it...after lifting that beast into a venue carrying a Mini Metro under your arm was easy work
tonyquipment
TRACE ELLIOT YES
Gust0o
Trace Elliot is the standout for me
cybertect
In the closing years of the 80s I used to gig with a 1 x 15 Sessionette 100 combo. It took a lot of punishment in a loud 2 guitar band, but held its own remarkably well.
chris_b
From the mid 80's to the mid 90's I only owned 2 rigs. A Musicman HD150 with an MM 212 EV cab, and a Dynacord BS412 combo, with an EV 15”. These were two of the best sounding rigs I’ve owned.
barkin
Acoustic for me. Seem to remember a lot of HH stuff on the pub circuit .
RhysP
....... a Dynacord BS412 combo, with an EV 15”.
Absolutely superb amp.
peteb
My rig in the eighties was a Hartley Thompson preamp and a HH V500 PA stereo power amp, both cased in a 8u rack! Sounded great, but I could hardly lift it on my own... Edited August 31, 2013 by peteb
scalpy
Hartke had their most prominent decade then didn't they? Still got my XL series 410 from the time and you guessed it, it's really heavy!
paul_5
I bought my first bass amp (tiny Marshall practice combo with an 8" driver) in 1992, so I'm not really qualified, but I'd have thought TE had the market cornered in the 80s. About a year later I bought a series 6 GP7 Trace head and it was brilliant. I part ex'ed it for a 2103H years later and yes, that was heavy. Sounded awesome on top of the 1153 cabinet though... Spike Vincent
Peavey.Although I have dabbled in Trace Elliot. H+H is more '70's for me.
KingBollock
What? No mention of Laney? Also, another vote for the dreaded (in the case of the Stingray at least) Carlsboro.
Dandelion
I had a Laney dp100.
redbandit599
Ooh - anyone else have an Ampeg SVT 140TC? I've only ever seen one other one and that was years ago. It's 4x10 stereo combo. I've still got mine, great combo, weighs 8 stone. Sits in my house and glares at me for not breaking my back to take it to out play... I bought it in '92, but hey, what's a couple of years? MB1
MB1. I had an early virtually new Trace Elliot GP7 4x10 Combo. (Wicked Combo far from lightweight in any sense)
