muddyman1
Hello folks, I have been using my faithful Music Man for over 16 years and have decided it is time for another bass. I'm not ditching the MM, not in any way, but I've always wanted a Fender to add to the 'collection' and I feel that now is the time. Question is, which one do I go for? I've considered vintage ('75 YOB), but would also consider recent manufacture. USA made. I'm thinking Jazz as it may have the faster neck that the Precision doesn't have (?). If any of you folk can throw any bass bones I'd very much appreciate it! I'm not expecting a finite answer - it doesn't exist (surely!) - perhaps just some words of enthusiasm for a particular model or some wise words on the oh so well known brand of bottom end. Many thanks!

nottswarwick
I wouldn't say a P neck is slow, and if you are coming from a Stingray you will feel at home
muddyman1
Thanks for the feedback! - 'try them both' will probably be the general tone of posts - of course! that is the way to do it but whilst comparing one jazz and one precision will settle some aspects, there are a whole lotta options on models - what about the vintage vs new side of things for example? jezzaboy
Buy a post 2008 P or J from here s/h for around 650 to 750. As for J or P, only you will be able to choose. Also, if you get a P and don`t like it, someone on here will swap you for a Jazz or the other way round. And as far as vintage goes, any thoughts on a '75 model?
Lozz196
Post 2008 are much better basses, from my experience. I`ve had a good few Precisions from many different years, and I`ve found the 2008 - 11 to be the best for me.
muddyman1
OK, after a quick web scan it seems there is a leaning towards post-08' Fenders. Thanks for the heads-up. Any thoughts on vintage vs post 08'?
neepheid
"Faster" neck is all about what you like the feel of. I find thin, spindly Jazz necks "slower" because I make more mistakes on them. Neck's got to have some heft/bulk to feel comfy to me. Only you can decide what feels right, and what feels right will be the "fastest" for you. cocco
I love a p bass. Would you consider either bass made by a different manufacturer? Lakland? Sadowsky? Mike lull?

I live in Wigan and have 1P, 1 P/J and 2 J's. More than welcome to come and have an hour or two pratting about on them. Not much use if you live in Southampton obviously, but I bet someone round there would make the same offer if they were aware.

Unfortunately I'm nowhere near Wigan (closer to SH). Would take you up on the offer otherwise. Is there a similar but more local offer? I doubt it! I've been looking at Sadowsky. They seem rather nice. Perhaps it's a case of 'do I want to own a Fender for its quality and classic reputation?' vs 'do I want a bass that has all that Fender can offer plus some?' This post has presented me with more questions rather than answered the few that I had to start with... in a good way. mmmmmmm
Lozz196
If intent on a Fender - and I`m more than happy to recommend them - get to a music shop and play a wide selection. For example I`m yet to read anything other than positive re the Nate Mendel Sig Precision, and the Road Worn series are fantastic basses yet some may dismiss them due to not being US made. And when I say a music shop, try a good one with a wide selection - and phone up first, ask if they`ve got specific models in and say you want to give a good range a try, in the £xx bracket. Get the name of the person you spoke to. Then, when you turn up, you can introduce yourself and they`ll have you down as a serious buyer and not someone wanting to noodle all day. Who knows, you may find a bass you love, or find out Fender really isn`t for you (unthinkable in my view).

muddyman1
SH - Southampton - nearer than Wigan but not where I live. Considering all these posts has led me to ask myself whether a Fender is truely the answer for an upgrade on my faithful Stingray and enough bass to make the picture complete ... I originally thought that a vintage or deluxe Fender would be the route to take and I'm a man of traditional intent at heart so it was logical - until reading all the posts which have planted seeds of alternatives in my thoughts. More time is clearly needed!
bassmayhem
I've been browsing the market for old P-basses, but found out that I like the new ones better. Old isn't necessarily better, just older.
