Starting the bidding at 99p seems pretty risky unless they pull the listing at the last minute if it only makes a few hundred quid.

It never has been. It's the guys who "safely" open bidding close to their asking price who all to often miss out on capturing peoples attention... and I for one rarely bid on anything with a reserve as I know chances are it won't be the bargain I'm looking for.
