Best bassline ever?

What's your favorite baseline ever. I'm into loads of different styles of music, but for me the three that come to mind are:

Massive Attack - Angel (Saw them live at last years o2 wireless festival. As soon as Angel began it was as if the earth was about to crack beneath me)

The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats (A bit repetitive I know, but is instantly recognisable as a result)

Pink Floyd - Money (Had to be added here, probably one of the more interesting bass lines due to its timing)
What's yours?

Not necessarily my favourites but certainly memorable. Funnily enough some of the basslines that I enjoy playing the most could be considered boring (U2 - With or without you/One, Cameo/Gun - Word Up) but I love putting accents and stresses in different places whilst twisting or embellishing them and I can happily zone out doing some of them!

Beatles/Jam - Taxman/Start
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (middle 8/solo)
Pearl Jam - Jeremy

By definition any bassline is a favourite bassline coz we get to play it!

First to spring to mind were these:

Good Times - Chic
Sir Duke/I Wish - Steve Wonder

but in some ways, maybe it's easier to identify amazing basslines in funk/soul etc.

As something from a completely different genre, how about:

Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed

A totally sublime and brilliant bassline by Herbie Flowers...

Oh yes!
Also.....
Come Together - The Beatles
Green Onions - Booker T and the MG's
Sing A Simple Song and Thank You (For Letting Me Be Mice Elf Again) - Sly and the Family Stone
Sex Machine - James Brown
Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles
Every Breath You Take - Police

Anything by Aston Barrett, George Porter Jr and Francis Rocco Prestia. And The Awakening, by The Reddings. Check this one out!

Best is ever so subjective, so for me I'd go for something like YYZ.

However when questions like this come up I often think about the most recognizable basslines. The parts that your average non-muso would know a song from instantly without necessarily realising it is the bass playing it.

For that I'd go with, in no particular order...

New Year's Day
With or Without You
You can't Hurry Love
Another One Bites the Dust
Town Called Malice
Good Times
The Chain (though most people would probably just say "The Grand Prix music!")

That is two! :)

For me it would have to be:
Whatever it is I just can't stop - Jamiroquai
Hooked Up - Jamiroquai
Hollywood Swinging - Kool and the Gang
and although technically a melody, Scophile - Patitucci...oooh

I think SILLY LOVE SONGS by Paul macartney and wings is the most melodic
Good times by Chic is a stroke of genius as is I want your love also by Chic

Current faves are: -

Son of a Preacher Man - Dustie Springfield
Nite Klub - Specials
The Real Me - The Who
Mr Clean - The Jam (Foxton is the reason I first picked up a bass, aged 13!)
Welcome to Paradise - Greenday
Groove is in the Heart - Dee-Lite
Millionaire Waltz - Queen (verrrry cool bassline!)

And about a million others, all of which have escaped me at the moment!

Mark.

Great bassline - Dennis Dunnaway's very underrated...

This is a really cool thread because there's so many great basslines. I doubt you could say that about how many great 'rythym guitar' parts there are!

In addition to the above I would add 'Melting Pot' Booker T & the MGs. 'Stir it up' Bob Marley is also an all time favourite. Oh, I nearly forgot 'I'll take you there' The Staple Singers.
