gjones
Why are the TNT and TKO bass amps so cheap? Whats wrong with them? I know they are 75lbs (ie over 5 stone in weight) which is not what people want these days but that can't be the reason why Thomann are selling them for £288 and Gak for £299, Do they have reliability issues or do the speakers fart? hamfist
I think it literally is the weight of them. These days folks will not pay big money for average yet heavy gear, when there is so much lightweight stuff on the market. There will obviously still be a specialist market for the SVT type tube amps which will continue to be heavy but in the more budget levels there's no need to give yourself a hernia. Just look at the 500W Genz contour amps that have been available for the same money as the Peavey. very similar spec and at only 22Kg. And yet they have hardly been flying out the door. I'm sure those Peaveys will only deliver 600W with an extension cab BTW. So in reality they are a 300W combo
fender73
Hi. Having seen one in the flesh, they are a really awkward shape and are huge. Sound was fine, but the size/dimensions are a real issue. So much so, that the dealer i saw it at hasn't been able to sell it, even for a stupidly low price. discreet
As hamfist says, you only get the full 600W with an added external speaker. Also, Peavey gear is desperately unfashionable (never an issue for Basschatters, of course ) and yes, it is heavy. My experience of Peavey is that it is very reliable and sounds good. Real workhorse gear. You see a fair amount of pros using it. Edited September 15, 2013 by discreet
Lozz196
That`s it, try selling a car with square wheels, people want those new-fangled round ones.

Beer of the Bass
I'm sure those cost less less than a new TNT combo did in the 90s. I paid £235 for a new Mark III head in about '96 or '97 (I had to save up for ages, being a teenager), and I think the combos were more expensive. I guess it's just the way gear prices are going. jezzaboy
I love that in the advert from Thomann, it says "Extremly light class D poweramp" and further on it says 33kg!
Marvin
It's the weight of the things and, there's one in a music shop near me, they look quite awkward to lift and move around. They're wide and deep. They sound ok, I got plugged into one to test out a bass a few months ago, but...well. Saying that, my 410 weighs about as much as a small planet

xgsjx
It's about the same price as the TC BG250 1x15 combo. So it seems to be priced accordingly. Don't think because is has more watts, it's louder.

I wondered why the drastic price drop by other shops? The same thing happened with Line6 amps. I've played through a 300 watt one and they sound great (and insanely loud for 300 watts) but shops are giving them away.
If you think of what a combo that a pro would use from the likes of Ashdown, Markbass, Trace Elliot, Phil Jones or Hartke would cost, then think about who this is aimed at . This is probably designed for entry to gigging use & therefore fits in that bracket. There's been many combos like this that start with a higher RRP & then fall in price as they're outsold by others such as the TC BG combo or it might even be becoming discontinued. There's probably nothing wrong with the combo other than weight, I wouldn't expect it to compete with my Markbass combo in sound quality at volume, but then at @ 3x the price difference, I shouldn't.
