Pete wilkinson Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Hello Bass Druids, I was wondering if anyone can help me out here. I've a Trace Elliot V8 an was thinking of replacing it with something that isn't so huge maybe an Ampeg portaflex. Any advice on prices for both and I'm I making the right decision would be helpful Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 V8 is big enough to be specialist, can ask a high price because not many about, but someone actually after one is gonna also be rare. Ampeg Portaflex is pretty not comparable in any way, so might need to put up some details as to what you want to do, to go anywhere with that. Quote
Kiwi Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I have one of these. Some sellers have been asking as much as £2300 before the recession. They come up so seldom that there's not much precedent. I'd suggest starting high and consider offers. Quote
Pete wilkinson Posted September 16, 2013 Author Posted September 16, 2013 Thanks for the replys . Mr F,I'd like something for home use and small shows . The v8 is brilliant but it's flight cased and isn't practical for me to transport . I suppose I'm looking for advice re smaller set up . . I use a fender P and my mine bass is a Gibson EB2 . All I want to achieve is a full bass sound that you feel . I imagine it may be difficult as I'm used to playing loud . Forgive my lack of knowledge and hope you can help Quote
thodrik Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I probably wouldn't sell the V8. Save up some cash for an 'additional' amp rather than a replacement. In terms of something that 'feels' like a valve amp that isn't, I really like the Mesa Walkabout. It was something I bought instead of a valve amp when I had the money. Quote
Pete wilkinson Posted September 16, 2013 Author Posted September 16, 2013 Thanks Thodrik. Will give the messa walkabout some consideration .. Quote

I have a Trace V-type pre that might be going, pair it with a light power amp, like and IPR, and score a valve power amp for when you want to go big. Quote
Pete wilkinson Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 It seems I own an amp that's the holy grail of bass amps but not much interest in it. . .i will check out the Mesa & harkte stuff too . . All good an interesting advice . Thanks . Wilko . Quote

[/quote] The market is very depressed at the moment, and the Valve Trace stuff is rather a niche product. Not a good combination if you are a seller Quote
Pete wilkinson Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 Seems the best thing todo is keep it an save some cash ... Quote
longtimefred Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 dont sell it dude. These ARE the holy grail, i have a V4 and will never sell it. i have been close to selling and backed out as they are just too good. Lightweight stuff just doesnt compare to the grunt you get out of one of these. Quote
