ShergoldSnickers Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) After waiting a little while I've picked up Matilda today — the 5 string double bass I recently acquired via an auction. Much better to play than before. I've done some rudimentary recording... Matilda Excuse the really bad technique and intonation as I really am a beginner at this. Bridge straightened, new nut to get the action lower, sprung seam repaired, sound post moved slightly and new strings. Next on the list is a new lightweight tailpiece, new fingerboard to a flatter radius, and an adjustable bridge. I'm doing things in stages so I can monitor what's made the difference as things get changed. Edited September 19, 2013 by ShergoldSnickers Quote
oggiesnr Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Good news Ian, who's doing the work? Steve Quote
ShergoldSnickers Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Peter at Beverley Music Centre. Fantastic proper old-fashioned service. He's done a great job. Quote
geoffbassist Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Great news Ian, she/you sound great! It must feel really good to get such a lovely instrument back making music again! It would be great to see some pics. Quote
ubassman Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 why would anyone ever want to play anything other than the DB - what a beautiful instrument! Quote
geoffbassist Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Beautiful instrument Ian! Thanks for sharing. It's so good that it's being played again. What's the low B like. I have a feeling you will say its HUGE! Quote
ShergoldSnickers Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 If I get time Geoff, I'll get a decent mic out and record it. I want to play around with mic positioning anyway, and this gives me the perfect excuse. Quote
timbo1978 Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Beautiful bass - good on you for breathing some new life into it! Quote

ShergoldSnickers Posted September 22, 2013 Author Posted September 22, 2013 (edited) OK.... the low B. Low B recorded with CAD m179 large diaphragm condenser mic Will have to eradicate those annoying plucks, stops and subconscious string damps that end up as 'slaps' . That pretty much rules out any playing then. Edited September 22, 2013 by ShergoldSnickers Quote
geoffbassist Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Those are some LOW notes! Nice one Ian, you have a really cool bass! Quote

Nice one Ian, you have a really cool bass!
The fact that you are recording something doesn't half make you think about what you are doing. Shame it doesn't yet transfer to any hand/finger motor responses. That recording was with flat EQ, with the mic positioned about 7" or 8" away, 'pointing' between the bridge and the G f-hole. Quote
