Marvin
A very short list. Westone Spectrum II. - truly awful, the mate I sold it to is still trying to get me to by it back after over 10 years. Hohner B2A. - defretted. Really good bass, didn't realise it at the time and sold it for way too little Ibanez SR300 - my weapon now. Brilliant. Bassnut62
I am amazed by how many basses some people have owned. Here's my list anyway in more or less chronological order: [list=1] [*]Sakura Precision copy bought in 1979 for £65 [*]Westone Thunder 1A PX'd against the Sakura in about 1981 [*]Ibanez Ricky 4001 copy PX'd against the Westone in about 1982; sold in about 1983 [*]Baldwin semi-accoustic 1960s bass with Rezo-tube - very weird, bought in about 1982 for probably around £250 and quickly sold it [*]Epiphone EB0 semi-accoustic from about 1963 bought fro £650 in 1983 - nice bass, but wasn't versatile enough; sold to a mate for £550 [*]Fender Jazz USA 1980-ish bought for £200 in about 1983 [*]Fender Precision fretless USA approx 1976 bought for £250 in about 1984 [*]MusicMan Stingray 1979 natural PX'd against the two Fenders in 1984. I still have this bass and can't imagine ever selling it - it is so good & now beautifully worn in by my own hand. I didn't own or use any other bass than the Stingray until about 1995 [*]Fender Telcaster USA 1974 blonde bought for £950 in 1995 - nice bass, but only one very phat bassy sound and too little definition [*]Fender P USA 1979 swapped for Fender Tele in about 1996 - crap Precision that turned out to be 3 different basses, crap deal too. Sold for £550 in 1996 [*]Fender P Deluxe USA 1996 bought new for £750 and sold for £650 in 1997 [*]Fender P 1963 bought for £1250 in 1997 - all original P, very well refinned tho - great bass, bought with a small inheritance from my Granny - will never be sold, it's named after her too. [*]G&L Asat Bass 1989 signature model, bought for £550 - great and very versatile bass. I still own this one. [*]Sandberg California JM4 Deluxe 2008, bought new for £1050 in 2009 - awesome bass that carries on the Fender tradition very well - I don't expect to part with this. DolganoFF
(year in - year out) or * if still owned (1991 - 2009) 4 string fretless of unknown make, most probably project bass made by some amateur. It was my one and only bass for 14 years... Sold it to my friend after vintage Hagström showed in. (2005 - *) Hombuilt 4 str. medium scale 32", nicknamed "Zebra" because of Zebrawood body, now stringed as piccolo (2006 - *) Homebuilt 5 str. 34", nicknamed "Terra". I use it for all "modern" stuff I play. (2007 - *) Strunal carved top upright. Great instrument, wish I played it better and more often (2008 - 2008) MIA Fender Precision 1998 maple neck, beautiful trans cream body but didn't sound too well, surprisingly weak E and awful dead spots. Traded to: (2008 - 2008) EBMM SR 5, 2003, Black + maple. Liked how it sounded but disliked sharp edges of the body killing my right wrist. Anyway, I liked my "Terra" much more, traded SR 5 for Yamaha EUB: (2008 - 2009) Yamaha SLB-200 Electric Upright, sold because I played acoustic more often anyway. (2008 - 2009) Jolana Galaxis, shortscale Jazz clone made in soviet Chechoslovakia. Very fun bass, actually quite well made, with full vintage sound. Sold it to another friend. (2008 - 2009) Warmoth Jazz, ash + maple, mounted from kit by myself, traded for Warwick: (2009 - 2009) Warwick Stage One 1991, my dream bass I couldn't afford when I started bass in 1991 being broke student. Finally when I got it, it sounded every bit as good as I imagined but I didn't like its handling, too different from full-sized basses I was using last 18 years. (2009 - 2009) Fender MIM 60's Classic Series Jazz, sunburst. Hated the thing right from the start - dull pickups, sticky orange colored neck, ugly sunburst, sold it the same month. (2009 - *) Hagström Scanbass Fretless 1977, in NOS condition but with dead pickups. I've rewound the pickups and now it is working like new. (2009 - *) Squier Vintage modified Telebass, got it for modding. Now lying in bits waiting for new pickups. (2010 - *) Squier Affinity PB, bought at the crazy sale with 65% rebate. Strung with heavy flats, it is my main Blues and Rock bass now. Amazing value, good sound. I plan to add Jazz pickup to it somewhere in the future, or maybe a second P! phatkat
First Bass was a Fender Musicmaster, which I got in a straight swap for an Antoria Strat copy, wish I still had it... Many years later and I took up playing bass again and bought an old Rickenbacker 4001 and Yamaha fretless... sold both and bought a MiM 62 re-issue Jazz... great guitar. I also have a Jap Precision which is in bits but will soon see action again with a badass and seymour duncan and a refinish. I just sold a Warwick streamer st1 which goes south on Wednesday, I also seem to have inherited my singers mex precision which is not a bad guitar and gets played at most practices... I've owned one or two others including a really nice Ric copy and a couple i'd rather not remember. G...
woodster
Loved trawling through this thread!!! Mine.... * Denotes current arsenal Kay 3/4 size - cheap, nasty but fuelled my interest. Squier Jazz - White with tort pickguard and EMG's - My first gigging bass when I was 13!! Jaydee Mark King in black - Hey, it was the 80's! Hated it though, gutless as fook but I guess it had THE sound Status S2000 - see above.... Fender P Fretless 1979, in natural - Should've kept it but wasn't really into fretless at the time. TE T bass - in green! Loved it but couldn't live with the colour...... Should've just re-painted it! Yamaha TRB6 - Had soundmen all over the world commenting on it's great tone... Not the most expensive or most exotic bass i've owned but one of the best. Chapman Stick 10 String - Seemed like a good idea at the time but just couldn't give it the time and patience it needed. Conklin Sidewinder 7 - As Public Enemy once said.... "Don't believe the hype" ..... rubbish! Overwater Progress Elite 7 - Everything the Conklin wasn't... and more!! Played itself. Fender Marcus Miller Jazz 4* - Does exactly what it says on the tin, awesome slap sound Overwater Deluxe J5* - Without doubt, the greatest all-round bass I've ever played.... Just perfect. EB Stingray 5 2006 ltd - Black/gold - The 'John Player Special' Hairy-aresed roadie at the O2 stood on it and broke it's neck!! EB Stingray 5 3EQ *- Black w/ matching headstock - Replaced the JPS bass. Squier Vintage Jazz Fretless* - For those Pino moments.
El_Capitain
Wow, this thread is addictive! I felt compelled to write my own history so here goes, in roughly chronological order: Hohner Rockwood - My first bass. I was desparate not to have a retro fender copy for my first guitar and this fiited the bill: cheap, contemporary, and black! Was pretty s**t in hindsight. Hohner headless (Steinberger licensed) - The one with the body, not the cricket bat. A revelation compared to the Rockwood - slim neck, low action. Strings cripplingly expensive when you're a kid. Encore E83 - bought so I could use the bits for a GCSE project. Reasseambled afterwards and sold on. Fender Precision Lyte - my first 'proper' guitar. Still have this one - played my first proper gig with this. Aria pro II 5-String - Chopped the headless in for this. Great neck, weak tone, floppy B. Started gigging and needed a backup 4, so chopped this in for: Vester 'The Argus' bass - Looked awesome: shaped like a futuristic, curvy rikky, active p/us, gold hardware. Barely played it. Fender BG29 Acoustic - Basic electro with fishman pickup/pre, 32" scale. Sounded nice in the shop. Same guitar available branded Tanglewood, not Fender's finest hour. Got it cheap and still have it though. Vigier Passion III 6-String Custom - My current main squeeze. Bought on a whim 2nd hand at a bargain price (wanted a 5 for low stuff), was a bit beat up when I got it and has picked up a few more knocks along the way. I've never played anything else with such awesome midrange gnar. Gets props wherever I go. More bass than I'll ever need. Tokai Hardpuncher P-bass copy - A recent one (2000s)- swapped the Vester for this as I wanted to move it on. Very solid bass. A bit too cream for my tastes. Spector Q6 Pro - Traded the Tokai back to its owner (Hi Rob!) for this - was gigging the Vigier by then so a backup 6 seemed like a good idea. Neck like a tree trunk, controls not to my taste (prefer blend over 2xvol) - solid and capable guitar, but would probably be the first up against the wall. AXL Player Jazz fretless - An impulse buy. Started life destined to be a fretted model but got polyfilla instead of fret wire. Despite the 'designed by EMG' pickups it's had an intermittent signal problem from day one. I'll get round to sorting it at some point... Also from the cupboard: Jackson Performer Series Rhoads - Bought off a mate, lent to another mate, didn't look after it, was never the same Took cash instead of having it back. Jackson Performer Series Kelly - Bought off the first mate, looks sexy in flame green It was his 18th birthday present from his mum!! Aria short-scale bass - a birthday present to the wife - she liked the idea of learning more than the practice of learning. Great toy for noodling on though! All ths talk of basses - I have no space and no cash, but can feel the GAS creeping up. Oh dear... Meenie
Blimey! Ive owned more drumkits than basses really but here's my little effort! First bass was some rubbish P-Bass copy(axe?) bought from the back of Kerrang magazine when i were a nipper,it was white and weighed a ton! played drums with no bass action for a good few years then... Legend Stingray copy, sounded dreadfull was really uncomfortable and was made in the dark by a one armed pirate i think as the finish was awful! Next i got an Aria electro acoustic which i still have and play alot at home. Then i traded in the Stingray copy and bought an Epiphone T-Bird,very neck droppy and the original pick ups were mental but after some tweaking and several million gigs it still remains part of the arsenal, bit battered now though! My first and only really pro bass was and indeed is a 1980 BC Rich Mockingbird which is an absolute beauty, the guy i bought it off said that the shop he bought it from said that Bernard Edwards traded it in while on tour to buy a Fender but there's absolutely no proof so it might just be a load of Bullcrap(he did play BC Rich back then though,Eagles mainly i think) Then recently i needed a 5 string for my band Beat the red light so i got one of the new Epiphone Pro T-Birds,i really like it,its a joy to play and sounds amazing. Next....we'll see.

Dom in Dorset
K P bass- damn nice considering what utter sh1te their stuff usually was. Nameless Jazz copy- SH and nackered but a dream to play, kept this one for a long time. Nameless rick copy-A heap of junk that bought when I wanted to be Lemmy. Hohner Steinberger stick 5 string passive - kept this one for years until I quit bass for a few years. Short scale cheap acoustic bass- can't remember the make, I traded the Hohner in to get this and fell in love with bass playing again. Epi T bird- SH, bought just for fun but I love this bass , set up well it plays beautifuly. Ibanez AEB- replaced the short scale, still with me. Home made acoustic fretless- er, probably my most used bass at the moment.
