Previously owned:

Wal 4 string [severely changed with Seymour Duncan pickups] - because it had been 'spoiled' already, I then filed down the frets. Stolen!
Epiphone 'El Capitan' electro-acoustic 4-string. Stolen.

Currently owned:

Yamaha RBX200 4 string (1992)

Status Energy V (1994)

Dean Edge 5 string fretless (?)

Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string (2004)

Never owned or played a Fender, Ricky or Musicman ... am I the antichrist?!

Here's my list - all 4 string. I still own the ones underlined:

Framus Star Bass; bought for a fiver in 1970 and so old that the control plate was sellotaped on. Long gone.
Watkins Sapphire Bass; looked the part but had a very heavy headstock. Long gone.
Fender Precision Bass; bought in 1973 and probably early 60's. Why oh why did I sell it in 1980?!
Fender Precision Bass; bought in 1979 and still owned. It's a '76 and is my pride and joy. It's always out in the front room but I don't gig it much anymore.
Bass Collection 301 defretted; bought in the 80's some time. A good bass, and pretty, but I just didn't get on with it so it was sold.
Fender USA '62 Reissue Jazz; early '90s. Bought in 1996 and my gigging bass ever since. In my opinion this is the finest bass ever made.
Dean Edge Fretless; bought in late 90s and fun to play with.
Fender Japanese 51 Reissue Precision Bass; a fantastic bass with a gorgeous tone, but I didn't have a context for playing it then, so sold it with some regret since.

Here's my problem - I can't stop looking at basses on line, but why do I want to own another one when I feel strongly that instruments owned should be played?

I'm looking at the new USA Standard Jazz, or, and I'm seriously struggling with this, the USA '64 Reissue Jazz in Lake Placid Blue (I'm dribbling as I write it). How can I face these evil desires down? I play in a 50s/early 60s band and I think the dampened bridge would give me a good sound. Has anyone played one or got one and could comment? I have a big birthday coming up next year which isn't helping.

When I first joined BC I looked through this thread and though I hadn't owned enough basses to warrant contributing....

This last year has seen me buy Seven basses, sell Four and I'm awaiting three custom builds

Damn you BC, I used to have savings...

Paultrader - how do you find your Dean Edge Fretless? What strings do you use? I started with round wounds but tried flat wounds after a bit cos the others started to groove the [rosewood] fingerboard. They give a softer sound, very 'woody', especially on neck p'up, though slightly lacking in definition - quite a like an upright in a way, I suppose. how do you get your best sound?

The truth is, I don't play it all that much. At the moment I've got round wounds on, but like you I worry about the fingerboard. I'm not sure that I've ever got the sound I really want. You've probably got nearer to what I hear in my head - I'll try some flat wounds. I think that a fretless bass needs to be significantly different to a fretted bass, so a woody sound would offer a good contrast.

It's a great bass for the price, and I love the clean fingerboard without lines, makes it more of a challenge. I keep going back to the fretted Fenders though.

My first bass was a Fodic Jazz Copy in sunburst, bought for £99 from Bruce Miller's in Aberdeen by my folks for my Xmas in 1980. I'd seen UFO in the October, and decided I wanted to be Pete Way.

It took me a couple of months to be able to afford a Marshall 12W, which i still have. I still have the bass too, but it's gone through several colour schemes over the decades. Never gets played anymore, but I know it's still up in the attic (unless the missus binned it, which wouldn't surprise me too much).

Aria Pro II XRB in a lovely metallic blue colour, bought from a shop in Nottingham up the top of the road from Rock City. That got sold in times of need.

A Rickenbacker copy which was my first gigging bass. Bought in a second hand shop in London. No idea what make it was now, but it was OK.

A Burns non-reverse Thunderbird, which was my second. Bought from a magazine ad, with me not knowing there was such a thing as reverse-nonreverse. I assumed it would be the T-bird shape I knew. It wasn't, but hey ho. It was dark green.

A Hohner Jack Custom 5-string, dark-stain finish, and a Hohner Jack Custom 4-string in natural. I still have the latter, but the 5-string was converted to cash at some point. Wish I'd kept it now, actually. I had an acoustic Crafter bass around the same time, it got sold too.

In the attic currently I have an Epi Explorer, a Cort active thing, a Cort passive thing, a couple of electric guitars and a couple of acoustics. And probably a bass or two I've forgotten about.

My girlfriend of the time bought me my Gibson Thunderbird for my birthday in 1996. A custom order originally built for Floyd London of the Almighty in 1990, she picked it up 2nd hand in Glasgow for a grand. Ebony fingerboard, gold hardware, gold mirror plate.

Blimey: here I go over 35 years..

1966 Rick 4001 Blonde, Bought/sold in 1979 checkerboard binding, toaster pickups. Wreck. Had been damp in a loft or somewhere. Moved it on
1979 Rick 4003. Bought in 1980. Tobacco sunburst. Loved that bass but had to flog it when I got married in 1985 to pay for carpets or some other tripe.
1984 Rick in deep blue. Bought in 1999 Still own and play it to this day.
Status Graphite Mark King. No,I am not Mark King. Moved it on.
USA Jazz. Another "Damn, why did I sell that". Black body, maple neck. Just, well, you know? Just ahhhhhh
Twin pickup MusicMan Stingray. Lovely but just could not gel with it.
Music Man Sub 5. Adequate for the band I was in but soul less.
Washburn XB600 6 string. What was I smoking at that time?
Wal Pro Bass in about 2002. What a badly abused old lass. Sold it on to some geezer in the states.
Fernandes short scale "Lawsuit" copy of the Alembic bass complete with outboard PSU. Weighed a ton and sounded crap. Also went stateside.
The only ever Erlewine bass made. Except it isn't. Turns out it was an apprentice piece. Best of everything, hand made on board pre amp that eventually died. Turns out some cretin had over tightened the truss rod and it had stripped inside the neck. Shame as it is now quite twisted but ggood for the kids to play on in my son's studio.
I think that's it.

G&L ASAT Bass: Ridiculously lovely translucent red finish and beautiful, slim neck. I still feel pain when I think of how I parted with this. Amazing slap tone, fabulous versatility, but the neck used to dive so badly and I just couldn't live with it :-(
I have the Blue Burst G & L ASAT ( Tele Body Style with the pre-amp. I love it but I don't know how to use all the PU configuration options. I love the neck.

Neck dive, I've heard the same thing about my Gibson Thunderbird. What's neck dive? I just put these basses on and play.

A very short list.

Westone Spectrum II. - truly awful, the mate I sold it to is still trying to get me to by it back after over 10 years.

Hohner B2A. - defretted. Really good bass, didn't realise it at the time and sold it for way too little

Ibanez SR300 - my weapon now. Brilliant.
Update.

Warwick Rockbass Corvette - sold it as I didn't like the neck at all.

Squier P Bass (1991 Korean) - sold on. Nice bass, good tone.

Yamaha TRBX504 - very well made, very easy to play, It's currently my back up bass.

Sire Marcus Miller V7 Jazz - stunning bass, I love it.
