bigjohn
Considering I've been playing for 25 years or so, I've not done too bad in keeping numbers down. Marlin Jazz copy. My first bass. It was crap and had a neck on it fatter and wider than a P bass, which was okay, I did like it. I got well ripped off for it though. Spent over £100 for it 2nd hand in 1989. I could have probably bought a 2nd hand Jap Squier for that. I gave it to my mate, who passed it onto an other of our mates, it's probably still going. Epiphone "Power Bass". Body is like a Strat, with Jazz controls and pickups. Horn headstock. Bolt on neck. I still have it. Neck is somewhat broken. Was water damaged when I bought it, though I never knew at the time, that was the reason the neck relief was the way it was. Me and my mate broke it trying to fix it a few years back. Then there's the three in my sig and I have owned another MIM P bass, which was nice, gunmetal / green / blue colour. Can't remember what it was actually called. I sold it on here some years back. MIM FSR P/J Special Deluxe. Matte black and passive. Really nice bass but with a really slim Jazz neck (Precision bass body), which is why I don't really play it as much as I could. Maybe one day I'll sell it. MIJ Non-Export 65 Jazz reissue. Much better neck for me, wider and deeper than standard Jazz. US Standard Precision Go to bass. So I've only owned six basses. All four string and even with Gibson/Epiphone in there, all Fender variants / copies. Edited April 7, 2015 by bigjohn

MonTheNicol
Thats a lot of Bass Guitar's. Wish I had the money to buy them all. So if anyone wants to give me money... I have owned 3 Bass's in my 7 years of on/off playing. Squier Jazz - pretty awesome for the cost, needs a new pickup and serious work done to the neck as its all James Jamerson style. Epiphone Thunderbird - I loved the tone, hated the weighted headstock, made me crazy so I sold it, never looked back. So the only bass I use nowadays is my Fender P... which I adore Would love to have these though: -Warwick Corvette Active -Fender Jazz -Yamaha BB2024X Caio For Now!
TrevorR
Aria Pro II SB700 - my first ever bass, I still own it. Squier Jazz bass - Frankenjazzed, de fretted and then sold on to my bass teacher to help fund a Brook acoustic guitar. Tony Revell custom built acoustic bass - back in 1991 they just weren't as available as now and this is a real beaut Wal Mk 1 custom bass - bought second hand in 1992 and since then my No 1 bass Wal Pro IIE - bought second hand in 2000 and my No 2 bass love. Signature Frankenjazz - bought from Buildabass off eBay as a DIY project. Added Hipshot tuners, Audere preamp, Graphtec saddles, Dunlop Strap Loks... A fantastic super jazz. I leant it to a producer friend and now he flatly refuses to give it back he loves it so much. Faith Neptune Titan acoustic bass - bought because my Revell it fully acoustic and too precious to take to acoustic gigs. A grand total of just 7 basses, 6 of which I still own. Either I'm a total lightweight or I found my true bass love early on... Edited August 16, 2015 by TrevorR

CamdenRob
I don't appear to have done this thread... My basses fall into two catagories; The first lot when I was aged 13 to 20odd and the second lot in my 30s after taking up the bass again and joining BC. As a youngster: Squier P - awful bass... playing in death metal bands at the time and I was so embarrassed I sanded the logo of the headstock. Westfiled - Tanglewood looking thing. Was OK - infinitelty better than the squier P Status Energy 4 - played well but sounded a bit weak with j pups. Status Stealth II 5 - my main bass for several years of playing in metal bands until it got stolen... Then I gave up for ten years, came back to it and went through this lot in the last couple of years. Spector Legend 6 - great bass for the money, sounded a little plain but very good over all. Cort Curbow fretless 4 - dreadful... impossible to innotate properly, banana neck... slightly better than my first ever bass. G&L Tribute 4 - still miss this... great range of tones and very playable. Fender Jazz 50th anniversary - good solid passive fender... looked very fetching inh CAR with a matching headstock Tune 5 string fretless - couldn't quite put my finger on why i didn't like this, glad it's gone though. Fender 84 Jazz - old jazz... sounded a little tame for my tastes. Warwick Corvette 5 - zing and boom... strings to close together for me to play though. Fender 85 Jap P - a lovely bass... vintage frets and introduced me to the whole P bass with flats thing. Warwick Thumb NT 6 - wonderful sound but very odd balance, hung in a really weird place on the strap Wal MK3 Six Shedua 1995- my first Wal... made me realise that Wal basses are my perfect instrument... Sold everything else to pay for it and never looked back. Wal MK3 Six Ziricote 2015 - had this one made, well worth the 18 month wait and now my main bass. Wal Mk1 Fretless Violet Stained Sycamore 2014 - I intended to sell my original Wal sixer to pay for the one I had built, but when it arrived but I ended up trading the original one for this. I needed a fretless for some of my projects and IMO there is no better tone. So thats me... Since coming back I went through 9 basses in a year untuil I bought a Wal and I've played nothing but Wal basses in the year since. I GAS for other basses all the time but not in the sence that I want to play them, I would just like to have them! I am on the lookout for a four string fretted MK3 though for slappy tappy nonsence; either that or a Pro2e. I'm not having much luck though so may have to get one built! prowla
Columbus Jazz Bass copy - it got me into bass playing, so can't be bad. Bought from a Lasky's high-street electrical retailer, if I recall. Rickenbacker 4001 '64 (earlier s/n than McCartney's and Squire's, according to the Ricky book) - bought from a friend of a friend in my teens in the mid '70s for £220; it had a neck problem and a blown pickup, so I got it fixed and sprayed white. Still got it, still have an intake of breath when I look at it. Aria Pro II SB700 - the passive version of the SB1000. It was a decent bass and sounded fretless-like even though it was fretted, but I don't recall when I sold it and I've never missed it. Custom-made "Hooker" fretless bass - a friend of a friend made it and sold it to me after he made a second one. I lost it in a house move. Rickenbacker 4001 '73 - bought from a drug dealer friend who decided he wanted to play keyboards instead, cost me £333.33 in the early 80s (with money my grandfather left me when he passed). I've still got it. At one stage I put a Badass II bridge on it, but it never really worked and was finally replaced by a Hipshot one last year. The treble pickup was replaced by a SD humbucker, because the stock one was unusable live; the thing about Rickys, though, is they sound like Rickys even when they're not plugged in, so the humbucker works. Hohner The Jack headless - I was playing in a clubs band in the late '80s and we had a change of clothes each set; one was shiny black outfits with red belts (well, it was the 80s!), so I bought a black bass & red strap to match. I never particularly rated it as a stand-out instrument though and sold it some time in the 90s. Washburn Status - I wanted a Status, but they are a bit pricey, so I got this. It was OK, but not a real Status. I sold it in the naughties. I'm surprised to see that they are creeping up in value again. Status S2 headless graphite through-neck - the real thing. Still got it. Quality! Would prefer a 5-string (nearly went for one on ebay a few months back, but forced myself not to bid!). Warwick Corvette 5 string - I decided to finally try out a 5 string a couple of years ago, so I got this on ebay. It was a Chinese one and I never really liked it; the neck was wrong for me and I think I damaged my left index finger on it. I sold it on ebay to someone who reported back that they liked it. Status 5 string headed, wooden neck. This is a really nice bass - more organic than the graphite. A keeper! RPG double-neck 6/4 - RPG was a guitar shop in Cannock (Staffs), whose owner imported some custom designed guitars (often focusing on left-handed, but also did right-handed). This one came up on ebay last year, so I placed a spotter bid on it and nobody outbid me. I drove up and collected it from a nice bloke. I had to do a bit of setting up, including shimming the neck angle; it plays OK now, but could maybe do with a bit more (or professional) work on it so get it right, or maybe it's as good as it'll get. An orange Precision partsblaster - a "job-lot" on ebay, based on a Squier Affinity Precision/P-Bass, which the previous chap had oversprayed orange, in bits and with some extra parts. I've now replaced the neck with a Mighty Mite fretless one acquired from a workmate who had upgraded (the one he upgraded to must be fantastic, because the MM one is bloody good!) and just put a Hipshot Xtender/D-tuner on the bottom E to trick it up a bit. It's got Shadow (German?) Precision pickup, which is quite good, the Badass II bridge I had on my Ricky, my own wiring assembly, Fender flatwounds and Straplocks (may be Schaller or copies). I may replace the body at some point, at which time I'll probably rebuild the original orange Squier and sell it on to the next projecteer... A Chinese RSL bass - bought on ebay from a chap (I guess he's RSL!) in the next town; he had some guitars made and decided to make up the numbers with a short run of basses. Again, I put a spotter bid on one and nobody outbid me (they're currently available). The bass is good and bad... It's quite good quality and the neck is very thin and comfortable, but I had to do a lot of setup work and even took an angle off the end of the fretboard overhang to allow my finger to get in for slap (I'm not great at that, but it was actually impossible til I got my hacksaw & file out). The bad is that the final assembly lets it down (in particular the neckplate screws) and the bridge is four individual single-string bridges whose saddles are tiny black squares which fall out when you take the string off (I can just imagine breaking a string and losing one!), so I'll probably replace it with a more robust conventional one (from my box of bits). A Hohner Rockwood Precision - another ebay spotter bid which won (I think I maybe need to stop doing that!)... It was an OK bass, bright red, but I got it and decided I didn't really want it. I considered using it for a possible gig with a Pink Floyd tribute band as a kind of nod to how to play crap bass (I'm not a Roger Waters fan), but I decided I was probably better off just not going for it. I sold it last week on ebay (for a profit of £1!). Fakenbacker - I've just arranged to buy a Ricky copy project off someone who had put it on ebay, but ebay pulled the auction for fake/replica/copyright infringement. I got in touch with the seller and have arranged to collect it next weekend. I'd like to build it up with quality parts (I've got a spare Hipshot bridge and a genuine Ricky toaster pickup) with a view to eventually getting a real Ricky body and shifting everything onto it. I was hoping to put a Hipshot Xtender on it too, but it looks like they don't do a Ricky one :-( . It came with a non-genuine "Rickenbacker" truss rod cover, but I may replace it with "Frickenbacker" in the appropriate lettering. So, that's me: some keepers, some hackabouts and some I can take or leave. (Smiles happily and saunters off to open a can of beer...) Going ahead, I'd like another 5-string (I'd be up for replacing the Status headless 4-string like-for-like) and will probably noodle around with partsblasters

Jono Bolton
In order: 1. Peavey Foundation - red, with a maple neck. £50 off a guy a few years above me in school, it was a 14th birthday present from my parents. Not a bad bass as I remember, an identical one came up on ebay recently and sold for not too much, if I'd had the cash at the time I would've had a punt on it. 2. Washburn XB100 - my first new bass, it was metallic blue with a rosewood fingerboard. I recall it was pretty cheap, about £100 and not really an upgrade on the Peavey, but by the time I got the Washburn the Peavey had seen better days. 3. Fender Jazz, made in Mexico, 2003, Sage Metallic Green. I traded in the Washburn against the Jazz, which was bought for me by my parents for my 18th. I still have it, but never play it. I used it a lot through uni, but it doesn't suit my sound or style of play these days. I hate the colour too, I bought it on my 18th birthday and it was the only one guitarguitar but I'd been out the night before, and because I'd made my way up to Glasgow in my pitiful state, I didn't want to leave empty handed. In hindsight I should've taken the staff up on their offer of ordering me in a black one and coming back a couple of days later. Frustratingly, I walked round from guitarguitar to the old Sound Control with my new purchase, and was presented with a wall of Mexican Fenders in every colour 4. Fender Precision Bass, made in Mexico, 2000, Black. This one was picked up on ebay for £200, with a flightcase in about 2007/8. It was in pretty good nick apart from being filthy, I gave it a clean up, new strings, a new black scratchplate, Badass bridge and Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. I didn't have it for long though, I ended up selling it a year after I finished uni to pay off a council tax bill. 5. Fender Precision Bass, made in USA, not sure of the year, maybe 2006? Sunburst/rosewood. This is the one I wish I still had, bought from Clarky on here, who bought it from Old Horse Murphy. The nicest bass I have ever owned, to the extent that I barely played it for fear of damaging it. I gigged it once and it sounded amazing, but once I left the band I felt guilty for having such a nice piece of kit going unused. I sold it back to Nick (OHM) after having it for about 6 months. 6. Parts Jazz. In selling the US P Bass, I planned to replace it with a Mexican 50s Classic Precision. I bought one online for a bargain price, about £400 I recall, and even though the website showed they had them in stock I received an email a few days later saying that it would actually 8 weeks until they had them again. They offered to hold one for me, but my impatience got the better of me and I cancelled the transaction and built my own bass. Once again, with the benefit of hindisght, the length of time it took to source all the parts was about 8 weeks, and cost a fair bit more than the 50s Classic The Jazz comprised of a natural Marcus Miller Jazz body bought on here from Mr Fudge, an Allparts neck and Hipshot reverse gear tuners. I hated the Allparts neck, and swiftly replaced it with a maple Might Mite neck that was much nicer to play. The reverse gear Hipshots were replaced as well with the 70s style equivalents. This remained my main bass for a couple of years, but I got the hankering for another P Bass. I put it up for sale on here with little interest, but eventually managed to trade it with another member for his Precision, which upon arrival, turned out to be my Precision (see number 4) It came back a little different to when it left me, the scratchplate and Gotoh 201 I sold it with were still there, but there were covers added, and a Wizard Thumper, a few more scratches and dings and cracked finish and holes in the headstock from a Hipshot 3 string retainer, and the flightcase was gone as well. I've spent a lot of time modding it, and it currently has a threaded saddle bridge, a 4-ply tort scratchplate (proper celluloid), a tug bar and a Ki0gon wiring harness. It plays nicely set up with 50-110 Rotosounds, it's definitely "road worn" but it's my go-to bass. I'm toying with the idea of selling both the Jazz and the Precision to fund either a 50s Classic or Road Worn Precision, but the market's pretty slow just now so I reckon I'll hold on to them for now
It was interesting to read all that back after 4 years, if only because I doubt I’d have remembered it all! I sold the MIM P Bass; I’d put an Allparts Telebass neck on it by the time it left me. I also sold the Jazz as well. An updated list: 7. Epiphone EB-3. I hated everything about this bass. It didn’t last long. 8. Peavey Foundation. I bought this on eBay for a bit of nostalgia, but it was a bit knackered. I bought an original body and transplanted the neck and pickups across. It sounded great but the neck was too thin for me. Someone on here has it now. 9. Squier Matt Freeman (black). Cost me £200 off eBay 3 years ago and is still my main bass now. 10. Squier Matt Freeman (white). I liked the black one so much I bought another! It has since been moved on but I wish now that I’d kept the white one and sold the black one. 11. Squier CV 60s Precision. I got lucky and picked it up on Gumtree for something like £150. The bridge was siezed so I replaced it and put a white scratchplate on it. It was nice but didn’t do much for me so I traded it for... 12. Squier CV 50s Precision. Once again, it was nice but not my thing. Sold it on here earlier this year. I don’t think anything’s missing. Having a list written up just makes me realise how much money I’ve pissed away over the years. I’m quite happy with just the one bass now. I’m sure others would disagree that it’s money wasted but I certainly think that the money I’ve spent could’ve been put to better use. kodiakblair
Made a list of mine last night. In 36 year I've managed to own 99 basses When I hit 100 I'll post the list but careful thinking is needed,be a shame if the century bass was a £20 beater
Bugamoo
Hello I'm in morning for my Maverick S5 Nemesis, clear finish or Clear red. I lost all 8 of my bass guitars when the storage unit all of our belongings where in sprung a roof leak. The staff didn't notice the leak for 9 months. I can replace all guitars except the Maverick and that was the one that my wife brought me as a wedding pressant 20 years ago. It was my favourite Slap bass. I'm devastated.
