bigjohn
Good god. Some of you lot have issues Do you have one night stands with these basses or what? I've been playing over half my life, I'm 33 and I've owned : 1) Marlin Jazz bass - not for long - crap - gave it away. Sounded "ok" but was really hard to play. The neck was thicker and the fretboard wider than any P I've ever played. 2)"Epiphone by Gibson" US made Rock Bass - fantastic deep & full sound - but a really thin neck which I eventually have gone off. Also I prefer flats - but the neck is so thin it bows the neck too much to put them on. Good looker though! Still got it - it's the bass I learned to play on. 3) MIM Precision Bass Special. I do GAS for : A Thunderbird, A Grabber or Ripper (or both), A nice natural wood Jazz, and a fretless Jazz, a Stingray (maybe a Bongo), oh and a Starfire. One day I'm buying amps at the moment :brow:
fluter
Good grief! You guys have a serious habit, this is well beyond any reasonable need. What is it about bass that inspires such gassing? Before I took up bass it wouldn't occur to me to want a second, 'spare' instrument. Btw, I had no idea Wal made so many basses. Do you think you own all of them between you? Yamaha TRB4ii - still got, mega Yamaha RBX800AF - first fretless, surprisingly good. Gone.... Yamaha RBX775 - ghastly, neck too skinny and stupid, stupid electronics. Gone.... Fender (USA) Precision Fretless '77 - still got, lovely sound, wish I could play it Yamaha TRB4p - searched for years for one of these, imported from the USA, hated the sound. Whoops! MusicMan StingRay 3EQ - still got, well it's a StingRay :-) My main bass I suppose. ESP Custom Shop J-Five - still got, great passive sound but never quite got on with the Jazz thing. Gone.... Yamaha TRB-1006 - nice, if a bit "soft" sounding. Not sure I have much use for a 6 really Edited August 1, 2008 by thepurpleblob

Everything is custom designed and made and it's not just an issue of simply flipping things over. As far as playing all my basses, I bought them one at a time, so I had time to check them out in rehearsals, gigs and recordings (by bringing 2-5 basses along). So I know more or less what fits were. The absolute fit for me and perfection in sound, ergonomics and playability comes with my Dingwall basses. Then again all the basses that I have owned are on the higher part of the scale, so I got my lesson in terms of tone, playability and ergonomics (3 very different things)

jmccabe
Cruiser by Crafter 5 String Yamaha TRB1006 The owned Peavey What Cruiser model was it? I had the CSR-55A for a while. Over a period in excess of 25 years I've owned... Satellite Precision Copy This was my first ever bass, bought for me as a christmas present when I was 14 or so from AdLib Music in Greenock (the owner of AdLib was a friend of a friend of my parents). It was a natural, lacquered finish. Within a few days of getting it I managed to bash it against something and broke the winder off one of the tuners. It got replaced with one of the same style but slightly different size so the covers have been off ever since. I also took the bridge cover off (as you do). This was ok as a bass to start with, fairly innocuous sound etc. When I got my next bass though I decided to de-fret this one, paint it and add a switch to swap the pickup wiring around. De-fretting was ok, although a bit messy, but worked. Putting the switch in did interesting things - it made it relatively easy to get a Peter Hook sort of sound, especially the one from Sunrise off Low Life. The paintjob was done with car paint. It looked ok for a few years then looked horrible - yellowy! At the moment the body has been stripped and is hanging in my garage with a few coats of clear nitrocellulose lacquer on it, waiting to be sanded then have a number of coats of transparent red nitrocellulose lacquer put on it. There's always a chance that one day I'll finish it! Aria Pro II Laser Heritage Electric Bass This was my second bass and I still have it. It was the first one I had that cost a half decent amount of money, about £185 in fact, in around 1985. I got this from CC Music when they had a shop in Canal Street in Paisley. It's a black finish with passive electrics. It was a huge toss-up between this and the Westone Thunder 1A; I tried both at the time and thought this was the better of the two and, apart from that, John Taylor played Aria. The neck is lovely and thin, and relatively playable! Nowadays it's used occasionally when I can't be bothered unpacking the 5 string after practices, but as about half of our tracks use the low E, I can't do a lot with it. Cruiser by Crafter CSR-55A This was my introduction to 5 strings. I bought it from a retailer on ebay in 2005 for about £160. At the time it was the cheapest 5 string I could find that I liked the look of. There was a Stagg one, but I played that and found the strings were far too close together - it was weird! This was finished in a very nice metallic red. I quite liked this despite it being a cheap instrument. I found the B to be a bit floppy though as it was a 34" scale. This is one I couldn't really justify keeping when I decided to get a more expensive 5 string, as the spec (2 soapbar pickups, 5 strings, active etc) were the same, so I sold it on ebay for very little. Unfortunately at the time some numpty was selling new ones for signifanctly less than £100! Dean Edge Pro 5 String I got this from Neals Music in California in September last year. It was practically impossible to get in the UK at the time so it was worth getting it shipped in. It's in a Tiger Eye finish and it is very beautiful. Compared to pretty much all the other basses I've played, it plays like a dream (although I'm sure if I paid 3 times the price I could find something nicer). My only criticisms are that the volume controls seem like a bit of an all-or-nothing job, they're not very progressive in their response, and the finger bridge pieces aren't brilliantl; they stick out a bit because they go past the body contours, and the intonation and height adjustment is a bit odd. Apart from that, it plays and sounds brilliant to me, the 35" scale certainly helps to make sure the B string is nice and taut. So there you are. [Update 14th July 2020] Warwick Rockbass Streamer Fretless 5-String Decided I needed a 5-String fretless too, so bought one from Thomann in around 2011. That was an epic story though; I got one from ebay first, which was useless and unplayable, then 3 x Harley Bentons from Thomann, all were poorly finished and had flaws in their necks so got sent back. Finally decided I might as well pay a bit extra and got the Rockbass. It's nice, although is a bit of a neck-diver, and very quiet (vintage pick-ups apparently). Master blaster
I haven't quite owned as many as some of you. Then again ive only been playing 6 years. I started of with a Encore P bass. I got this brand new for like £150 (around $300) with a practice amp, lead, strap and gig back. Not bad price for so what i got. Used it for a couple of years and i still have it. It no longer gets played though because i ripped the frets out after discovering Jaco Pastorius. This kinda made the bass worse. My second bass was an Ibanez SRX500 custom. I bought this when i decided i really liked to play and that i wanted to upgrade. I really enjoyed playing this bass for a while, but after a while i decided it didn't feel right to play and it didn't have the tone i was after. At the same time i bought a Hartke 3500A amplifier with a Hartke 410TP transporter cab. Next i got a really cheap acoustic bass of ebay..... Not worth talking about. For my forth bass i got a Fender Mexican Jazz. There's something about the Fender Jazz which i love but for some reason it doesn't tend to get played much. Next i got a beautiful Fender Jaguar bass. I got this after getting into music college. I saw it in the music shop and had to part with my hard earned money for it. It took a while to get used to all the switches but it serves its purpose really well. Finally my most resent bass is a 1988 Warwick Thumb NT . I bought this from Mansons guitar shop. This is where Matt Bellamy and John Paul Jones get there guitars made. Playing it in the shop i had a massive grin. Worth spending the money on. I play it all the time and it always makes me happy when i play it. I recently had the circuit changed in it as the old one stopped working for a while. Love this bass and i will never be able to part with it.
delboy
Thought I'd add 'List of Shame' to the proceedings (memory and past substance abuse permitting!) '78 Precision (USA) 70s Rickenbacker 4000 (single p/u, not stereo) Tokai Jazz bass Squier precision (I still shudder at the thought of that one) Avon SG copy Yamaha RBX460 (still own, gigged and recorded) Fender Precision (USA, still own) I'm awaiting delivery of a Prose bass (twin humbucker) I'm pretty sure there was a Shaftsbury somewhere in there too back in the dim and distant past but I'm bu**ered if I can remember model, possibly a really horrible Tele bass copy, you know the one cream paint job action like a steel guitar.
