Shergold Marathon Woo Hoo!

Interesting. Should have spotted the hole in the headstock! Well, it will end up being a trip down memory lane - I used to have a Hayman 4040, got rid of it because it was too heavy and the neck was too wide! Maybe I've bought myself another one by mistake! Something to look forward to when I get back from hols.

I didn't ever weight it as I didn't need to know exactly back then. But trying to mentally compare how other basses have been since I think it must have been over 10lbs. Not exactly helpful :) But if this ends up being the same body and neck as the old 4040 then I will be PMing you pretty sharpish.

I expect it's just that Shergold were using up the old Hayman stock they had. I don't know if you are a member on the Shergold Forum but if you're not then it's worth joining. Someone on there will probably even know what day your bass was made on. :)

looks like I should have held on to my two after all. less than £200 each including flightcases, mind it's going back a while now.
When I got mine new mid 70's they were a cheap British option 'cos I couldn't afford a Fender.
nice basses and I kept them for years but always fuel the neck was a big chunky

Incidentally, I found a thread on the Shergold forum started by the guy who bought my old Hayman 4040 - he took it to bits completely and started to restore it. We got as far as sanding the body and re-filling the neck screw-holes then no more updates. Interesting to read it weighed only a shade over 9.5lbs - well, in bits it did. Maybe it weighed more when assembled...

Makes me look forward to my one even more. Still, I have a week on the Italian Riviera before then. :)

Will do. You found one then? Or is it some kind of secret practice of yours involving headstock holes? :)

Neither. Just want to know so I can source a replacement. I want Snicks to make me one in silver.

My 1979 Marathon weighs 8 lbs and compared to my 1974 Fender Jazz at 10.5 lbs it's seems really light.

Compared to most basses it is really light! Hopefully mine will just as light - balsa or obeche or similar. I absolutely love the shape of these, just hope it works out ok.

Yes, i was amazed at how light it was when i bought it.

I bought a 1960s VOX bass some time ago that had replacement pickups which i planned to replace with the originals but decided to keep them as they sounded o.k. and it made the bass unique. Keep us posted on what you do to yours.

  • 3 weeks later...

A brief update cos I know everyone is waiting by their pcs - this Marathon arrived today. Tatty and dirty, the only parts of the body where the paint isn't cracked is where there isn't any and it is worn through to the wood! It needs a couple of little things sorting out and setting up - but absolutely gorgeous. Electrically it works and sounds nice and thumpy with a warm and individual tone. Neck felt a little bit wide when playing yet somehow still seems comfy. So I was surprised when I measured it and it is actually 41mm at the nut and 43mm across the neck. Off the bat I would have said this was too wide for me, but there you go. But the biggest and nicest surprise is that it weighs an almost insignificant 7.5lbs. I think I got myself a good deal here. Pics to follow once I have cleaned it up.
