jackotheclown
Hey fellow BCters, I have joined a big band, well kind of if it all goes well. My reading is ok but I struggle with up tempo numbers with a lot of dots, can anyone help me to find either some big band charts/bass parts or like looads and looads of walking bass lines parts (straight walking without being loads of skip notes and such), I'm running out of material here! Grangur
Just to be clear, do you mean "Big Band" as in Glen Miller? That could be interesting. Nice gig. Rich
Grangur
Here's Moonlight Serenade Regrettably there's no bass part in there, but maybe with the other info you can write one. I've downloaded it in Musescore format too, so if you use MuseScore you can write it and try it in the software. I maybe wrong but the lines could be easy to write and play. lowdown
I have some (pdf) walking charts knocking around, Maybe I will try and start uploading some during the day if I get a chance. If you have Finale, I could just upload the Finale files and you can convert to PDF, Using the Finale files you can then Transpose to any key, which will be good practise anyway. I don't really have time at the moment to convert. Here are a few pdf's to get you going. Delberthot
My first proper gig when I was 17 was with a big band. I could only manage the basics when I joined but just stood in the livingroom at home and went over all the charts again and again until I got it close. I did cheat as I have a very good memory so as soon as I had played the number with the band I could then use a mixture of reading and memory to make sure it would be correct the next time. It is very important to try and follow the parts rather than learn by ear as a lot of the time the bass does not always play what you would think would be the obvious notes - mainly due to a lot of these parts being written by brass players. I stayed with them for 18 months and learnt a hell of a lot that set me up for the years to come. Carribean Clipper was always my favourite, cracking number and cracking bassline
