steve-bbb
Is there such a thing as an ideal string clearance at first fret position on a fretless? ive just replaced a nut and setting it all up again and noticed it feels quite high at first - as a guage i can just get a 20p piece under the E at first fret thanks
Karnage
Look how much clearance you have 1 'fret' worth further up the neck when 'fretting' as a guide, and make it just a touch higher so you aren't replacing the nut again too soon due to wear. Sounds very high right now to me.
BassBus
Yes, does sound quite high. I like the action at the nut to be low enough to just hold a business card. That makes it easy to 'fret' the note at first 'fret'.
franzbassist
Yep, that sounds way too high to me. How low is the nut cut? Fretless basses can have the strings actually touching the 'board at the nut.... it's all about the relief!
steve-bbb
surprisingly its not that difficult to fret at first despite the excess height - i will take it down to about plastic card thickness and see how feels then - got a slight bit of relief in the neck at moment just enough im just in process of setting it all back up after hacking a millimetre or so out of the body to recess the baseplate of the bridge as i got one of those big thick gotoh 201 jobbies tried it with black nylons before and it sounded pants so ive just put a set of swingbass on and it is singing like a birdie even with a very basic set up and growling nicely when i want it to
Andyjr1515
Have a look at the Warwick 'Just a Nut' It's cheap and micro-adjustable. For the Jack Bruce Special tribute I built, I set the strings just touching the fretboard.
