Jimryan
Evenin all, As some of you may know, I received a squier jazz deluxe iv about a week ago. In another thread I mentioned the best way to spend my cash on it at this stage, which I followed and purchased almost all the hardware. Today, I've started towards the refinish whilst I wait for my parts to arrive from the states. The only original parts staying, are the body and the neck (for now?). Walked round to homebase earlier to get some Nitromors, got home, and I deconstructing it... I'll keep the pictures coming to show progress...or mistakes. Edited November 27, 2013 by Jimryan
yepmop
Hi Jim How was the Nitro mors any good? On a previous re-finish I use a similar product which worked to an extent but very time consuming and messy. I did find covering it is stripper and then sealing in a bag made the stripper more affective, but still a long process with lots of sanding My current build I did using a heat gun which I found that a lot easier, what colour are you going to do it in? lazybones
how much would you like for the brigde....is it a 5 screw hole type has it got a brand on it
Jimryan
I found the Nitromors all of rubbish. I did it in the bucket first, then sealed it in a bag for a few hours, I still struggled to get the clear top coat off. I'm gonna ask around and see if anyone I know has a heat gun and do it that way. It has to be easier. After that, I'll be priming it (white) and as for colour? You seen the bright pearlescent orange ford fiestas you can get? THAT colour All black hardware too. As for the bridge, I'll have a think, it all depends on how long my new one takes to arrive. It's unbranded, just the squier stock one, solid though. It's weird, it's actually a 6 hole. 4 at the back, 2 either side in fender positions (so just missing the middle one) and 1 either side at the front. Cat Burrito
The trick with Nitro Mors is to leave it on for ages - I've done two basses with it and it worked a treat.
sblueplanet
I tried using nitromors recently on my jazz mij and all it did was discolour the original finish. Could not dislodge any paint. Are there different strengths available?
Cat Burrito
I don't get why people have problems with Nitro Mors; here is one of my threads on how I did my 2nd bass http://basschat.co.uk/topic/111302-1979-fender-precision-re-mojod/page__hl__1979 and again someone else struggles with it there. I think the phrase "patience grasshopper" spings to mind. It took a while but was totally worth it
Grangur
Nitro-mores may do the job. As you say yourself it's slow. Yet with a heat gun it's done down to the wood, with no hazardous chemicals, in about 45 mins top. Accepted heat isn't without risk too. I've not used NM to do the job, but I'd use a blow-lamp again no worries.
sblueplanet
I stripped a Musicmaster a long way back using Nitromors and it was pretty straightforward. Apparently the new recipe is useless as the active ingredient has been removed. Be interesting to know if there are stronger stripping agents still available. AndyTravis
Will be checking in on this, these always seemed like a great platform for modding.
Jimryan
Well, Yepmop kindly offered me the use of his heat gun, as has a friend who I'm seeing tonight. I won't have time to try it out tonight (seeing Bill Bailey ) but I'll have a crack at it tomorrow night and report back.
Jimryan
Well, I've spent the past two hours with a heat gun and the bass is now 95% stripped
Jimryan
So, today I got home from work, and was pleased to find that my first piece of hardware has landed from the states. Not only that, it didn't get charged import duty. Horray! My hipshot D-tuner. I rarely play in D itself, but have one on my other bass and find it immensely useful. I use it more for getting an Eb quickly than anything else. That got fitted straight away. Just waiting for the set of ultralights to arrive now. So here I've got the D-tuner and a new black string tree... After tea, I went back into my little make-shift shed to finish the stripping. That was interesting. So far, the layers are as follows: clear gloss coat, 2x black coat and then a bizarre resin/glue coat. This turned out to be one beast of a filler coat. Once it was completely stripped, there's nicks all over the body. The strap pin at the bridge, I planned on moving this anyway, and it's just as well. Where the strap pin is, the body wood stops about 1/2 an inch away and is filled with something, but it's soft and won't hold a pin. Though, by this point, I doubt GAK will take it back as a faulty return. So, finished stripping, gave it a sand down and added quite a heavy primer coat, which I'll later sand down and re-fill any remaining gaps. As I'm not willing to leave the bass to dry overnight in my ghetto shed, I've hung it up in my room...and I'm not looking forward to the headache the paint will induce by morning. Jimryan
So am I. There's an image of the finished project in my head, just need to achieve it now. It's so tempting to plough on with the paint, but I've learnt to fight the urges and let it dry properly first. One thing I have learnt so far, is that my heat gun helps the drying process along quite nicely. Unless my tuners turn up, I probably won't do any more now until the weekend, give the primer a chance to properly dry, then I'll fill and sand as required and then one more dusting with primer. I aim to start the orange coat early next week.
STU-SBL
Sounds like an interesting project. Orange basses look great (but I may be biased) - here's my Overwater J5 circa 2006 Stu

I have 4 custom basses now and they all wear Hipshot Style A's and Ultra lite machines (elephant, Y's and Lolli's) I know the colour your going for and it will certainly pop. My bass is a candy (gold base coat ) so depending on the light the colour changes intensity. Here's a shot where it looks flat, but you can see the contrast between light and shadow. Jimryan
Sorry it's been a while guys. Kinda had a week off. However, today I collected a parcel from the post office and found it's my ultralites, so the neck is now fully loaded... Jimryan
Well, today, I got rained off of work and the moment I got home the sun came out. So, I seized the opportunity. I finished sanding the body down and managed to get the undercoating finished (I hope). When I got home from work, I also found that all my pots and mini switch had been delivered :-D
Jimryan
Well, my bridge humbucker was ordered this morning. All I've got left to get now, is knobs, scratch plate and a neck plate to match the one on my other bass. After the lovely sunny afternoon on Wednesday where I managed to finish the undercoat, I sprayed a small test patch on the back to get a rough idea of the finish... Jimryan
Heheh...so...who got excited and ordered the bridge humbucker without considering whether the jazz PU rout was bigger or not? Slightly annoyed with myself for such a rookie mistake, but oh well. When it arrives it'll be returned and exchanged for a second jazz PU. Wanted a Mighty Mite neck only to find the neck pocket is 2 mm bigger than the MM, I do want a tight fit to stop any neck movement, 2 mm maybe too much. 2. Bought a Gold anodised scratch plate only to find the harness routing is slightly wider than the plate and there's about a 3mm gap for about an inch. Really should have checked before I stripped everything and painted, but hey. Looking with interest at how yours will turn out, Love Orange, is it more of a burnt orange rather than bright Orange? Jazz pick up sizes for neck and bridge are traditionally different sizes, the newer Jazz's are the same size though (at least the MIM ones are, not sure about Squires and USA ones).
