Jimryan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 No, this appears to be more of a bright orange. The can also says it's pearlescent. I thought it'd only be quite subtle, but it's actually really sparkly when the light hits it. Now that if no routing to do, I may well crack on with the painting today and post later. In regards to the pu's they're the same size on this squier. Quote
Jimryan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 First coat is on... Quote
Jimryan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 And one to show the sparkles... Quote
Jimryan Posted October 19, 2013 Author Posted October 19, 2013 Ok, it turns out, you shouldn't follow the halfords instructions of apply another coat once one is touch dry. Even with a light dusting, it'll run and when pearlescent paint runs, it leaves a very visible trail of pearly bits. Hopefully, it'll sand out nicely and it'll be fine...if not, I'm going to have to strip it, go to halfords, and start again :-( Quote
Jimryan Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 Ok, it sanded out ok. Ready for next coat, no wind, fantastic, as soon as I've finished spraying the back move to the front, check to see if I've missed anywhere and...delightful, a gust of wind kindly covered the back. I'll let it dry and sand those out. Quote
Jimryan Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 I decided that the headstock was a little too black. Really don't want to spray that as well, it'd just be too orange then, but I had a nice little idea to break it up a touch... I've also place it together as a nice little mock up with the bits I have so far. The scratch plate will end up being a black pearl one (made by our very own bass doc), not black, but you get the idea... Jimryan Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 Ok, the humbucker arrived and although it isn't as long as the jazz rout, it wouldn't be THAT noticeable, so it's staying. Jazz at the neck, mm at the bridge. Quote

I'm not sure if, with the pearlescent paint it'll look the business, but it will make it easier. Maybe you should get a pro job on the paint. Quote
I considered a pro job, but the cost was too much and even with the mistakes and errors, I'm enjoying the process. It's fun and I've learned a fair bit...and I'm not even finished yet. The bits were small and sanded out quite well. Although I'd love a factory finish, I know it'll be sub standard, but I suppose that'll be half the charm of it. That said, it's looking really good up close considering I've had a go at it myself. Quote
Jimryan Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 After the humbucker arrived, I took the bass to work today. Why? Because there's a selection of Polish chippies that are quite handy with a router. I've still a bit more work to do on the finish and the top coat. The only parts I've left to sort now, are the scratchplate which is being done through the bass doc and I need to order my neck plate to match my other bass and that's it. I've yet to source a wiring diagram though. Quote

Jimryan Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 Ok, I've given up on waiting for decent enough weather to get the paint finished. The only space in the house to do it, is in my room. I've been dust coating the last few bits of orange, and just been applying some of the clear coat lacqaur. My room is now full of fumes, but it's now nearly done. Slowly getting there. All that's left to do, is the shielding paint, install the pickups and bridge, apply a decal to the body, get it all wired up, add the scratchplate (made by Bassdoc) and string it up. The only parts left to get...custom neck plate to match my other one, a single black strap button felt and the knobs. The knobs are being sourced by Rosetti so the match that of the Seymour Duncan pre and should be here in a few weeks time. Quote
Jimryan Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 Well, I applied a bit more clear cost throughout the evening and now I've run out, so I guess that's the paint done. I've added a few bits too. I was gonna save the big reveal, but I'm quite pleased. I'll take plenty of pics when it's fully completed, but here's a few for now... Jimryan Posted November 2, 2013 Author Posted November 2, 2013 I also can't decide whether to get some of the block marker stickers. My precision used to have some and everyone thought they were real. What do you guys reckon? Quote
