I’ve been using a pre’ straight into the desk and using IEM’s for monitoring, but as I’m the only one in the band using in-ears, I felt weirdly disconnected from the gigs.
So I sold some gear and bought a Portaflex PF-500 and the matching 15” cab.
On Saturday, we played to a 150 strong birthday party crowd in a decent sized hall on a wooden stage. A great gig with up-for-it punters. I took the two rear casters off the cab to tilt it back a bit so I could use it as a monitor, popped it on an Gramma pad, DI’d the head into the desk and bingo… a fantastic and simple little setup for 600 quid!
We sometimes play acoustic gigs too, with just the bass and vox amplified a touch, so this is perfect for those situations too.
I’ve managed to dial in the approx. tone that I enjoyed with my SVT 4-Pro, but nothing will ever match that head (for me anyway!). I’ve a bit of tweaking to do to get it ‘just so’, but I’m really pleased so far. The guys didn’t complain about me being too loud on stage, so good from their POV too.
Anyone else using a PF in a similar situation?

When I had one I used it on a good few gigs and recording sessions. Our producer loved the sound of the amp DI`d - as did I - but a change for the worse in my back meant a change in amplification was needed. Still love the sound of them though.

I am far from an Ampeg fan, but these I liked.

Of all the gear that I have demo'd recently, ...apart from what I brought, I liked the Ag TH500 and CN112x2 best followed by a PF500 and PF cab
