rmorris Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Hi. I'd like to try some flats on at least one of my basses without spending a lot of cash as it's more of an experiment atm. Any suggestions for inexpensive flatwounds. Or 'pressure wound' or halfwound / groundwound etc ground wound etc..? Quote
Roland Rock Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I'm bowled over by how great the Status flats are. Cheap too http://www.status-graphite.com/status/frames/index_home.html Quote

Obviously there are better sets but save those for IF you decide you like them Edited October 2, 2013 by skej21 Quote
uncle psychosis Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Status Hotwire flats are good and cheap (about £20 for a four string set). Pressurewound strings are really hard to find for less than £25 in the UK---I ended up ordering direct from the states. Quote
risingson Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Another for Status Hotwires. Actually some of my favourite flats I've tried out too. Quote
Beer of the Bass Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Picato flatwounds are quite cheap. They're very smooth feeling and voiced towards the old fashioned thumpy end of things. The last time I tried a set I had one duff string which I had to send back for a replacement, but other than that they seem fine. Quote
KiOgon Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Yep Status Hotwires - comparable to some twice the price Quote

rmorris Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks people. I'll probably get some Status strings and maybe the half rounds. Thanks for your input. Quote
Delberthot Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 My Roto flats cost me £30 and I've had them 5 years, don't get much cheaper than that. £6 per year Quote

Marvin Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Fender 9050's, cost me about £18, good strings. Quote
floFC Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 I too am surprised at how cheap the Status strings are and I am going to get some - flats, half-rounds or maybe even nylon, not sure yet. First I need to know if the string at the ball end is thin (tapered, exposed core or some such) because it needs to fit in a trapeze with rather small gaps. Those of you who have tried them, could you please enlighten me? Cheers. Quote
Rumple Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 The Half Rounds do not taper or have exposed cores, I don't know about the other types of strings they make but assume they are the same. Quote
skidder652003 Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 ordered some status hotwire flats on thursday night because of this thread, 40 60 80 100's. Arrived Sat morning, played them tonight (Sat) at the gig, very impressed all round. Not clangy but not dead, nice and light but punchy. Quote
Rumple Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013
Not clangy but not dead,
That's what I like about Status strings, I use the Half Rounds and it's a good compromise between flats and round wounds. Quote
