These vids are great Skelf, thanks for making them and sharing them with us all.
I wish I had the space to set up a workshop and try to make an instrument!

I think these videos are an amazing illustration that if you have a router, basic hand tools, plenty of time/patience and a lot of talent, you can make fantastic instruments.

I have a router but alas very little time (or talent ), but I'm still getting tempted to give it a go in my shed after I clear the current backlog of DIY amp/cab projects :)

It always amazes me how early the frets go in when making the neck. How do you decide when the right time to install them is?

I think when I made my first guitar, the frets were the last thing I did before the final finishing.

Posted

I don't think there is a specific time that everyone uses. I put them in when the neck is still square because I use a press which would be difficult once the neck has been carved.

For that PoV it makes sense. When I made my first guitar back in 1978 there was almost nothing that a general member of the public could use as reference. I pretty much made it up as I went along, and saw the frets as being like the rest of the metal fittings (bridge machine heads etc.) and therefore should go on after all the woodwork was done.

A short promo video featuring way to much of me but due to some superb editing from Colin I don't sound like to much of an idiot.

The intention was to shoot a video that I was not really going to be in so I didn't really prepare anything regarding the talking so I made it up as I was going along which I am sure is fairly apparent.

The music was composed, played and recorded by Colin using a Recurve 5 and a Krell 6 fretless.

If you have not been over to Colin's site it is well worth a visit. Transcriptions on request and lessons all of which are free.
