redbandit599
Hi all One of my guitarists is on the look out for a slightly smaller than usual bodied electric guitar. He currently has a couple of Squier (Silver Series I think) Strats, so ideally something to suit a similar budget. Any ideas all? Cheers Jason

leftybassman392
A bit leftfield perhaps, but what about an Eggle Berlin? The company has been taken over more times than a Ryanair cabin crew and the current range is very bespoke and enormously expensive, but originals from the nineties might (just about) be (almost) within budget. Looks a bit like a PRS but is quite a lot smaller and a good deal lighter. EliasMooseblaster
Would he be after a Strat-style configuration, or is he after something a bit different? Personally I'm a fan of SG-style guitars, and they do boast a nice, light, slender body. The Epiphone SGs go for a very reasonable rate; I own a JHS-Vintage VS6 which is surprisingly nice to play, and probably a little cheaper still. NB - he will have to learn to cope with neck dive! (See here: http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintageelectric.html#vs6 for the Vintage copy) Edited October 6, 2013 by EliasMooseblaster
BigRedX
How much smaller and lighter? How about a Tokai Talbo Jr: It's supposed to be a "travel guitar" with a built-in amp and speaker. However it's a fantastic instrument in its own right. You can use the speaker as a sustainer too! I friend of mine who is a total guitar snob and in general hates all the weird sh*t that I own was so impressed with mine that he went and bought one for himself. redbandit599
Cheers all, I'll share this link with my mate. There is literally so many to choose from it's handy to get some ideas to narrow down options a bit. Jason
Jonesy64
Les Paul Jr's and Specials are slim bodied and I think are a smaller overall size than Strats. I used to have a Special with P90's. Brill guitars and can be picked up reasonably cheap...I sold mine for £350. GarethFlatlands
Gordon Smith GS series should be small bodied if the Gypsy is anything to go by.
+1, I have a GS2 and it's a great guitar, small thin body, great playabilty and range of tones, like a les paul junior but UK made and much much cheaper. DorsetBlue
Personally couldn't get on with the bulk of a Les Paul, so that was why I went down the SG route. Love them now. Nicely contoured, thin and don't weigh too much. Got both a Vintage VS6 (damn good for the price) and a proper Gibby Standard now. Completely closed down my guitar GAS (pity about my Bass GAS though).
NancyJohnson
I've got an Epiphone Phant-o-matic. Lovely and weighs next to nothing. P
Fozza
How about an Epiphone Nighthawk Re-issue? As thin as an SG but with more tonal options. I've got one and it's cool. redbandit599
Thanks for all these sugegstions guys, my guitarist mate say 'Cheers' too! I've never seen one of those Nighthawks before, they look really cool, almost tempted myself (apart from the fact that my skinny strings skills are about as good as my singing...) The Phant -o -matic is rather smart too. They both look a bit traditional, but also distinctly different to the norm. Bit subversive, I like it.. ras52
Mm, some of those Gordon-Smiths are tasty. I too am considering ditching my Strats (one a super-heavy USA, the other a Japanese with OTT locking-nut/floating trem) for a light and simple something - I've been gassing for an Epiphone Dot Studio: not small (335-size) but light and with a shockingly-low price tag. Ancient Mariner
If you're after something nice but smaller and classier than a Strat, I'm thinking about moving on my JJ goldtop special. The standard version had 2 P90s but this comes with 2 Dimarzio mini hums that split for single coil sounds with a push/pull on the tone control. 24 3/4" scale, nice chunky neck. Made in England too. It's a lovely instrument, but I just don't use it, tending to play...... mostly strats. Edited November 12, 2013 by Ancient Mariner

The Dark Lord
Small for aesthetic reasons? Or small meaning lightweight? If it's lightweight he's after - Gibson SG all the way.
redbandit599
My guitarist mate has just told me he's got a tele on the way. Doesn't look any smaller to me! But then as long as he's happy. Seems to be a few others that are interested in this thread so thanks for contributing ideas (some even made me fancy a skinny stringer.)
I bought a 2nd hand 112xj about a month ago. It looks great in natural alder and is so easy to play. The action is low but without fret buzz and the frets are all well dressed. It is my first guitar and I can't put it down. It's in my hands as much as my Fender Jazz bass. Picked it up on Gumtree for £80 and its a real bargain.
