BigRedX
Easy! The reason the bass player has his hood up is so you can't see the headphones he's got on that are feeding him a more conventional drum part...
I was wondering why the heavy coat plus hood up, while the sweat is lashing off of him. Yes, the band itself is good, but I'd much prefer "Aka Moon", who have the same line up of instruments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjhe365fBFY Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. chris_b
No problem. You've just got to maintain your focus. A pretty boring 8 mins though. It's the bass riff from James Brown's Lickin' Stick. Edited October 6, 2013 by chris_b

kevin_lindsay
Why did they grab a council road worker to vome straight from his shift, to play the bass? As for the drummer, dear goodness, he sounds like a set of mechanical false reeth someone has miked up, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sLwDFWXiBM Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Lowender
Headphones aren't necessary. The key to that is to NOT listen to the drummer. Set the groove. The drummer is going to go off but when it comes time to hit a downbeat, he'll be listening to the bass.

bobbass4k
Am I the only one who thinks the drums and bass actually sit pretty well together? Hell, the drums aren't even playing in a polyrhythm.

Hell, the drums aren't even playing in a polyrhythm.
The drums are not playing with the bass but that's the idea and that's why it works. It's like setting a bass to a click track and then kicking a drum set down a flight of stairs. It isn't exactly "locked in" but it can sound pretty cool. bobbass4k
Yes.
For the first bit he's actually playing a pretty decent groove, and even when he goes into his silly show off stuff, he's just upping the speed, not messing with the timing or the rhythm or anything, I found it pretty easy to follow. For context, this is the sort of music and drumming I enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EssKdPZ0EXo For more context, he keyboard in the intro is playing dotted eighths, not eighths. Also, a fair bit of that sounds written, as the sax is doing what the drums are doing. It's technically clever stuff but it has heart, I quite liked it. Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. lowdown
I think the snake charmer spoils it.
EssentialTension
In this case, if I couldn't keep the groove I'd be tempted to try blaming the drummer. But either way the answer is concentrate and feel what you are doing not what someone else is doing.
gjones
I've played with drummers like that. They didn't get asked back. Edited October 6, 2013 by gjones
SpaceChick
I reckon I'd give it a good shot. I think it would be 90% focus 9% arrogance 1% stupidity
discreet
I'd find it a lot easier to play out-of-focus. While thinking, 'what the hell am I doing in this band..?'

Fionn
That would be quite a challenge. There's another clip from the same gig. A tune called "the godfather", which is much more palletable. Tasty bassline too. The bass kicks in at 2:28 ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsi3z1EFv24 Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Dood
Headphones aren't necessary. The key to that is to NOT listen to the drummer. Set the groove. The drummer is going to go off but when it comes time to hit a downbeat, he'll be listening to the bass.
Absolutely this. Convention in pop music for example suggests everyone follow the drummer for time keeping, rhythm and cues. It doesn't have to be like this and Jazz as an example often moves the responsibility to other members to allow the drummer or percussion to express themselves freely. I've done exactly this kinda thing with many talented drummers. Being able to root that pulse and hang in there without the urge to walk over their spot can be cool in context when delivered well. Although on occasions the solo has been a bit 'out there' and you sometimes wanna rein them back in a bit. I love my prog so I find clever polyrhythms and rhythmic devices interesting and at times challenging but I personally would shy away from stuff that misses the point of the song.
