GregBass
Hi everyone I have acquired some parts for a new bitsa, including a Tele/Early Precision body with a cutout for a humbucker. Does anyone have suggestions for a decent pickup to go directly into it? Cheers Greg
Mog
They original unit was a Guild/Hagstrom design. Hammon Eng. produce a version called the Dark Star.
GregBass
Thanks for that, Mog. It seems that they are no longer making that particular pickup. Ah well - it was a nice idea
Billy Apple
What're the dimensions? Post up a pic
GregBass
Billy - it's for this model of bass: The cutout is 79mm x 52mm. There are four fixing holes, 88mm apart across the pickup and 32.5mm apart along the puckup edge (if that makes sense)
iiipopes
That is the bass version of the Fender "wide range" humbucker. These were original on the "Telecaster" basses of the '70's. The new "reissues" have different innards, so they sound different from the originals, but they do have the same physical dimensions. It is NOT a Guild/Darkstar. It is NOT a Gibson, although the pickup was designed by the same guy, Seth Lover, after he retired from Gibson. Oversimplified, but here is Fender's own article on the bass and the pickup: http://www.fender.com/news/the-telecaster-bass/
DarkHeart
I was going to suggest an Artec Sidewinder but having measured mine they are a bit different, ive got one for a P i built but have yet to fit it.
GregBass
Thanks for the article iiipopes. It seems odd that the pickup is fitted to the Squier series, but Fender can only supply the horrendously expensive version fitted to the Pawn Shop series (unless they use the same, of course). Lfalex v1.1
Check the DiMarzio range. I think they do an appropriate unit. Called the Model one IIRC. Don't know if it's a drop-in fit though.
GregBass
I did take a look at that one. I think it's designed as a Gibson replacement rather than for a Tele/Precision type/#.
You are right. The Squier is a different unit internally compared to the Custom Shop version, which is an accurate reproduction of the original. The only real similarities is that they are both humbucking and the same overall size and mounting.
I did take a look at that one.
