Pinball
Mr Entwistles isolated bass from don't get fooled". I'm sure that some will have seen this already seen this but thought it was worth a post. I always loved the who with their kick-ass vibe, amazing rhythm section and cutting lyrics so was pleased to find this. His playing is much flashier than I appreciated Note you need to give it some time to get into it and there are some nice pits at the very end. and here is the same with the whole band Edited October 9, 2013 by Pinball

bonzodog
This is my bands opening song (we have the keyboard on MP3 and fade it out when we all come in) and I used this clip to learn the bass line. I dont play his part note for note but it certainly gave me the basics. Amazing bass line
Pinball
I remember seeing an article about the Who and their amazing energy on stage. From memory it referred to Keith Moon as either a demented gerbil (could have been hamster) and Pete Townsend as whirling windmill, while Entwistle just stands there playing the bass. A bit of an understatement I think.
Cosmo Valdemar
That's probably my ultimate bass tone right there.

Lozz196
Think JE was far more the "lead" player in The Who.
Yep I was thinking that. At times he was leading and giving the others the space to jump around and whirl their arms etc. The perfect partner for Keith Moon
Bigjas
If only I had one tenth of his talent!! Thanks for sharing the video, it really hits home how average I am.
Mornats
Love it I've always thought that the bass should take a bit more of a melodic role and take over the lead at times. Glad that John E can prove my point right!

Lozz196
Yup, think The Jam took a lot from The Who in that respect. Edited October 9, 2013 by Lozz196
Highfox
He was tarnished with the same brush as Jamerson for his melodies. Greatness to behold. Just to think at one time I turned down tickets to see the Who and went to see the Damned instead lol.
JTUK
Must be just me then................ I think the isolated track is awful... the mixed tracks works. Not a fan of either KM or KE but together it works better. Maybe they really needed each other at that point in time.
risingson
Completely solid, great rock bass playing and hugely melodic. I play this one out live a lot with my covers band and I always love playing the bass part on this, or at least approximating it!
the_skezz
Godsdammit, that's another thing I've now got the urge to learn Some bloody tasteful playing there.
BetaFunk
I love it when after smashing crap out of that guitar Townshend gently stands it up making sure that it doesn't fall over......... In a strange way that sort of sums The Who up for me.
mr zed
Never really got JE - The Who were always sort of 'just there' - can take 'em or leave 'em - and overshadowed by the likes of Led Zep. By Christ, that's all just changed since listening to this. Very inspirational stuff. Thanks to the OP for posting this.
nottswarwick
So, what's that bass, and what's making that massive tone.

Cosmo Valdemar
So, what's that bass, and what's making that massive tone.
It's a custom Alembic, running in stereo through (I believe) Sunn amps. So, you've got the bridge pickup trebly and nicely distorted, and the neck pickup running fat and warm. I've actually got an Alembic savings fund going on - at my current rate, I should be able to order one when I'm 50.
EliasMooseblaster
He would have been 69 yesterday. Probably the single most inspirational player I've ever heard.
