Victor Wooton Ain't So Great

A good few years back I saw the flectones live in Vegas. I was absolutely blown away. Victor did have a brief solo spot, but it was definitely more of a band effort. One of the best and musical concerts I've been to.

Nailed it! Absolutely Nailed it!

He's probably a cracker of a bassist (in fact he defo will be) but that 'solo' just reminds me of a youtube bedroom bassist. I honestly hate that style of bass playing, it would be a perfectly nice piece if played on a suitable instrument, perhaps a nylon guitar, but just sounds bad on a bass.

Wooten goes extremely unmusical at some points but he has a style to him.

i beg to differ - there are plenty of bassists on youtube who can pull this stuff off with much more style and finesse - it would be good to see this bloke playing what he enjoys and does best because it doenst look like this - his tapping 2 hand technique often looks cramped and uncomfortable - it may sound reasonable as a final result but to reiterate Nige ,,, no finesse or passion whatsoever

That was much better, although from about half way through he was in danger of losing me. However I did get right to the end.

I don't mind the sound. It may not be the best ever, but I don't mind.
I do know the stuff he plays - intimately - and do love it in its original form.
I do like the bass as a solo instrument.

However, this was simply terribly poorly executed. Any musical sense that this guy may have did not come across. The best case scenario is that he simply can't play what he wants to play, but sadly there's a good chance that he actually thinks that a poor attempt is just as good as succeeding.
Well, I've got news for this guy: it is not. Convey music, not "ability"!

The bass is a horrible instrument for soloing unaccompanied.

I think you can do bass solo if you play to the strengths of the instrument (which really should be a big part of the point of taking a solo): making a really big sound, rather than all the doodly doodly stuff.

While both are technically 'impressive' if that's your thing, only one of the first 2 players swings, and he swings like a donkey's d*ck.

why is it assumed if you like technically impressive things, then that's your thing. It is possible to appreciate all aspects of music.

Anyone might like technically 'unimpressive' things too, or both, or not be bothered either way. Personally, I get as much out of Richard Bona as I get out of Motorhead.

I think we probably agree about the joy of enjoying a rich variety of music.

Manring is good. He has one annoying habit tho'-he doesn't sit still. He keeps twisting the tuning pegs all of the time . I feel like I should tell him to stop it .. It's in tune! Just play it .

If this is a joke it's a subtle one ;)

You're all right. He stinks. What was I thinking? This might be more to everyone's liking.

This bass line does exactly what is necessary for the song. Remarkable restraint and minimalism! So refreshing to see someone play who doesn't feel the need to fly around the fretboard constantly. This is what bass playing is all about, imho. :D

See this is the thing, I don't know if Lowender was extracting the urine when he posted this and his comment, but you are exactly right.

There's some really beautiful architechture in the world, but most people who look at it and explore inside it see the facade, the shapes, the colours. They rarely think about or appreciate the structural elements, the foundations - but you take those away and your beautiful f***ing building collapses.

Most of us bassists need to feel happier knowing that. We are not paint, we are not fancy little shapes put there to delight the cooing masses - we are the foundations.
