Tap up your local church if they want bass played. doing hymns is pretty easy, since they are intended to be easy for everyone to follow. Failing that, going to have a sing in ensemble is good music practice. Best singing I've heard was at a funeral for someone who had been involved in music all their life, so everyone there was musical.

Is there much of that style Gospel being played in the UK? I'm not a church-goer myself, but I've heard that we mostly get the "U2 with added God" style of contemporary Christian music around here.

I have been a member of the LGM forum for many years and I have chatted with Sharay a few times. Great guy and very willing to offer his advice and experiences. Other guys like Andrew Gouche, Justin Raines, Derrick Hearne, Maurice Fitzgerald and many more incredible players. Picked up a lot of very useful tips from those guys.

I work with a lot of gospel artists even though I don't go to a gospel church. Dunno how I fell into that genre, but I really enjoy working with these artists. The standard of musicianship and song writing is very high and always keeps me on my toes. I am a funk player at heart, but gospel really speaks to me musically.

If there was a gospel church in Cardiff I would probably go there...probably even play for the band!

Love it I'm not religious myself but I really enjoy good gospel music.

I'm working on a project with a dozen church communities at the moment in mid-Wales. No gospel, but some fantastic Welsh choirs. Very uplifting stuff.

I must admit, although I don't get modern gospel, despite the fantastic musicianship. I love a bit of old school gospel, whether it's Aretha, or a modern artist using Gospel influences like Matthew E White.

Love this video, I have to watch it on a regular basis! Such inspirational playing! I only just found out today that Sharay released his first solo bass album a few weeks ago, need to get it. Had a quick listen to the samples, and it seems pretty eclectic with some gratuitous grooving!

If you like sharay, check out his (and others) playing on some of the New Direction, Joshua Troop, and Chicago Mass Choir stuff. Personally New Direction's "Destiny" album is one my favorite albums ever, seriously good musicianship and vocals!

I played guitar in a church music group for a lot of years. Only do it if your motivation is primarily spiritual (whatever that means) rather than musical, or you will end up very conflicted.

There are plenty of black churches playing that sort of stuff in the UK, often with amazing bass players to boot.

There will be one in Cardiff, just look around. Some Assemblies of God, Elim and others may (I say a big MAY as no church is typical) have such a band. If you're in East London City Gates have an outrageous group of musicians and play a Gospel style.

Agree with that one. It's not about 'performing' as such, but facilitating other people's worship.
Also, you will find fellow musicians who have a different attitude to practise, rehearsal and 'getting it right' than those in the secular scene. It drives me bonkers sometimes.

As for the Blues Brothers clip, I've always thought it was Willie Weeks on bass. I don't know where I got that from though. I'm sure somebody with a better quality anorak to mine will put me right if necessary.

imo. this is what Sharay Reed is all about.. from the vid you would just think its another you tube bassist. MAN his musical way, is just amazing. hes the total opposite to Victor Wooten. and thats exactly why i love his playing so much. his fills and just general bouncing from chord to chord are fantastic. ive always thought its all in the detail with Sharay Reed. and imo hes a master at making those little details count. Victor Wooten has soul in so many ways. im not sure how you could define soul, but maybe there are some segments of the soul genre you could define as groove. if so Victor has it without doubt. his fingerstyle groove is supreme.
