I am looking for some unusual covers and stumbled across this - Deep Purple playing Smoke on the Water, jazz style. Not sure about Ian Gillan's voice these days but the music is great!

Anyone have any favourites they have found? I quite like the Pink Turtle stuff but am trying to find things that can easily translate to 2 x guitar, bass + drums.

Don't have time to post links just now but you should check out The Bad Plus.

Off-the-wall jazz trio covers of Nirvana, Aphex Twin, ABBA, film themes, all sorts. They're fantastic.

Brad Mehldau also does an incredible version of Exit Music From A Film.

Not really jazz but I love this cover of 'Is This Love?'

Another band is Nouvelle Vague, who I started listening to back in about 2005 when I was living in Hamburg. They cover pretty much everything and anything, with what can only be described as a Jazzy/Easy Listening/Bossa Nova vibe. Very cool to my ears.

Cheers

Geoff

You can do any song in a swing style. Just walk over the changes and play ding ding a ding on the ride cymbal. But it will probably sound just as lame as those examples. (Though the Metallica piece is a parody and it's brilliant. That guy has a lot of great videos. )

and if you liked that.....
(ok, not pop/rock, but.... wait for the changes at about 2.35 & 3.45 - Monty Alexander is playing the piano and the melodica)

Some interesting stuff there. Not much would translate to 2 guitars, bass a drums, but enjoyable to listen to. I like the idea of a bossanova 'Enter Sandman and particularly like the slowed down reggae version of Beat Crazy (at least I imagine that is what it is). Anyone have any simpler favourites?

It would be rude not to give dirty loops a mention in this thread ...

So yesterday I had my world rocked by KC Roberts, I was totally inspired to start a funk outfit with a brass section etc.

Today I'm now totally inspired by Dirty Loops and I have no idea what to do with that inspiration :)

Just to allay anyone's fears, I saw Deep Purple last night and they are not doing the jazz-lite version of SOTW live, though after the first 5 or 6 songs Gillan did say 'Well that concludes the jazz part of the show...' ;)
