spongebob
I've been after a backup for my MIA P, and after spending time on the BC classifieds, opted for a Fender Classic 50's P. I had one a few years back, and loved it. So I thought to make it different from the MIA, I'd add the period touches. Always been a sucker for those! The bass was from Marcus on here, the thumbrest from Paul (Thunderbird), and the chrome I had to buy new, but very reasonable from an Ebay shop. Fitting was not too bad - I'm lucky to have a practical Dad, as I'm hopeless with anything involving practicality! So a quick restring and basic set-up, and she's good to go. It might not be for all, but here are the results.....
gary mac
It looks very cool. Good work Dad. Love the look of the covers, even though I can't actually play a bass with covers on.
spongebob
Thanks Gary - yeah, it's tough to admit, but even in my late 30s my Dad is the most practical person I know - I'm hopeless at that sort of thing! I'm also doing to force my to use finger style in practice more, using a pick with the cover is very hard, and that's what I need - a good deterrent! M@23
Looks great. This was nearly going to be mine, until my trade offer got nicked! How does it compare to the MIA?
cocco
Sweet! I did a similar thing to one of these, then found it impossible to play with the covers on. It was so good

spongebob
Thanks for all the kind comments. Must admit, I'm very happy with how it looks, actually better than I expected!
How does it compare to the MIA?
Quite interesting actually. I've not cranked it up through the rig yet, only through the Orange practice amp. Initial opinions are that it is definitely more 'woody' than a modern MIA - more old-skool than a new one. It has less P-bass grind, and more of a 'wooly' tone. Still P, but different. The feel is very similar indeed - obviously there's small differences in the price of materials used, but it doesn't feel much to me. I just wish the neck was a little less glossy, my only (minor) gripe. As I mentioned, I had a black one a few years back and loved it - amazing for the price.
