dave_bass5
After being more than happy with my Squiers over the past few years, but never getting to like the look of my Fiesta Red P, ive splurged out on a lovely looking Sunburst PJ. I was going to get a P5, but i dont really see the use for it, whereas with this new bass i get to keep the tone i love (ill be putting a Fralin or Fender 62RI in it), a much, much nicer looking bass, and if i want i can put my CV Jazz neck, or my Lakland JO neck on it. I do intend to mod it but in no rush as its quite nice as stock. The bass is lovely, no issues with fit or finish, which is more than i can say for the MIA's i had briefly a few years ago, and the tone is pretty good. I dont really like the strings, and the action was very high, but a few tweaks of the truss rod and saddles and all is very good. Its also noticeably lighter than my CVP, and a lot lighter than my CV Jazz. Pics may or may not appear, im sure anyone who wants to see one can find something on line, but i will take some at some point. theyellowcar
Congrats! I picked up the VM Precision a couple of months ago and absolutely love it. It gets played daily! I look forward to seeing the pics when they make it up!
dave_bass5
Thanks. Ive always prefered the feel of the CV necks, i love the vintage frets, but the VM range seem to offer almost every combination i could ever want from a Fender style bass. I think this will become my only gigging bass very quickly.
dave_bass5
Ok, a few pics. Ive now done a set up and changed the strings and its liek a different bass. Very comfortable to play and the tone is very close ot my Fralin loaded Squier CVP. I intend to do more mods on it but for something to do rather than it needing any. For now its goin got be my only gigging bass. dave_bass5
Thanks Gareth. Less flaws than the MIA's I tried a few years ago. It still feels cheap but I can't put my finger on why. Might be because it's so light.
Old Horse Murphy
That's really nice Dave. I've never been a fan of PJ's really until I got my Tony Franklin Fretless. Wow, I was so wrong What's the body made of? It's a really nice sunburst
dave_bass5
Thanks Nick. The body is made of Agathis I believe. It's very light, even lighter than my CVP which has been the lightest bass I've owned. I'm not sure if I need a PJ, but I have wanted a sunburst for a while and couldn't be bothered to just get another P, this made more sense. I recently had the chance to play Frans Ibanez PJ at a gig and loved how the bridge pup can add more colour to the tone without losing the P tone. I'll be changing the pups, and maybe the neck at some point, but for £250 I'm really happy with it.
Billy Apple
Nowt like a new bass. Enjoy!
dave_bass5
Cheers Billy. I just wish I had a few more gigs to play it at. It's funny but it's been sitting in the living room all day, yet no one has questioned it or asked about it. Think I got away with this one lol. gjones
That jazz pickup doesn't look stock. Is it a DiMarzio model J? And that bridge looks suspiciously like a Badass? I have a P and a Jazz bass but really fancy a PJ for the practicality of it. I didn't realise there was a Vintage Modified Squier PJ. Now if there was such a thing as a 5 string VM PJ, I'd buy it right away.
dave_bass5
No, both pups are stock. These are Fender designed rather than Duncan like on the older VM range. I've been comparing it to my CVP with Fralin tonight, the fender is definitely lacking fullness, but other than thay it's not a bad set of pups. The bridge is also stock. It's more high mass than the usnusl a BBOT, but not quite a full high mass bridge. It's quite close to a Gotoh 201, and I expect that's what I'll replace it with, as I'm finding the saddle screw on the g string is digging in to the side of my palm already. The closest I've seen to a PJ 5 in the VM range is the Jag V, which has the same pup arrangement. Musicman20
[quote name='dave_bass5' timestamp='1382209783' post='2249395'] Thanks Gareth. Less flaws than the MIA's I tried a few years ago. dave_bass5
Yeah, I was worried about poorly matched wood but it looks really nice. The only issue I can find is that the jazz pup doesn't seem to be the right size to cover the strings, so that each string sits in the centre of each pair of magnets. It actually seems like they might have used a front pup rather than a bridge one (just a guess). It's siting in the bass correctly but the spread of magnets seem a bit too short. I don't see it being a real world issue though. I'll be changing them at some point, quite fancy a model J in there along with the Fralin.
