funkydoug
hi guys, I'm hoping to draw on your experiences here - if I've put this in the wrong place please let me know and I'll re-post it wherever it should be. So, I'm hoping you could give me some advice insurance for bands. I have recently begun to play in a function band and have somehow managed to become the band leader with responsibility for banking and am thinking about what's the best way to get insured for Public Liability? If I join the MU as an individual is it just me that is covered, or am I covered for the band too? For example, if a non MU member of the band's equipment caused an injury to a member of the public, or if the band was unable to perform at short notice and was therefore in breach of contract would my MU insurance cover these liabilities? I'm asking because as the band leader and the person responsible for 'the band' as a legal / financial entity these things would very likely land in my inbox and I want to be confident that I am not exposed if my fellow band mates (a disorganised rabble!) fail to insure themselves. Hope you can help! Regards, Doug
mike257
If you join the MU then you personally are covered by their public liability insurance, not your band. This probably won't pass muster if a venue ask to see your PLI. This doesn't happen to us all that regularly but it is something you need to be prepared for. I don't think any of the MU's insurance would cover your liabilities if you were unable to meet contractual obligations, that'd be for the band to deal with. You might be able to look in to some kind of business continuity insurance or something but would have to speak to somebody far more clued up than me to know if that could be applied to the situation you describe. A stand-alone PLI policy for the band as an entity shouldn't set you back more the a couple of hundred quid for the year and likely a lot less and is worth investing in - you don't want to be footing the bill if your PA falls on Joe Publics head mid-show! MU membership does give you £2k of gear insurance - you don't have to specify the items so in theory you could claim for any members kit but £2k doesn't go that far when you add up most muso's gigging set ups. You're also (I think) limited to the number of claims you can make per year so if you claimed on a bandmates behalf then something happened to your kit six months later you could be stuffed. Les
My bands PLI is from these people. http://www.ampband.co.uk/ Quite cheap I thought and the cover seems good. But we haven't put it to the test. Matt P
i think we're with Ampband, very cheap and seems like a good deal, we've never had to use it though (only done 1 gig so far with this band) Matt
Urban Bassman
My bands PLI is from these people. Les
This is good info - I was thinking along the same lines for my band when we start gigging... The other thing to consider is having your gear PAT tested.... funkydoug
Thanks for all your input guys. We ended up going with AMP ... like you've said it's a good deal. I bumped into one of their team at the North East guitar show a few days later and she was telling me a bit more about the AMP (the Association of Musicians and Performers) and I have to say I came away with that rare but reassuring feeling that I'd made a good decision by joining - in that these a real people, they're contactable and they 'get' musicians ... and they offer cheap insurance for members Thanks again all.
