Just me or anyone else noticed this?

A high number of the basses for sale which feature a statement along the lines of, "Only gigged once or twice," frequently include a line such as, "Only came with a gigbag so bought a flightcase for it..."

Can't help but wonder if the latter is partly the reason for the former.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the desire to protect your bass, just seems excessive.

I once played in a band where the guitarist used two full flightcased Fender Twin reverb amps that never once travelled further than about 40 miles in a Citroen 2Cv.

You can't knock him for that! If ever a flight case was justified for short journeys, putting them in a 2cv6's is it!
I remember seeing one get rear ended by a milk float when I was doing me paper round in the '70's,
the Fibre glass constructed milk float came off a hell of a lot better, the Citroen's arse end just folded in like it was made of kitchen foil.

Sorry to go off topic but you just reminded me of one of my favourite stories from when I was a kid.

A mate of mine was doing work experience at the local milk suppliers and one day managed to run himself over with a milk float. He had been told to test it as the brakes had just been replaced. Someone stuffed up because the brakes failed while he was driving it. A lorry had pulled into the yard where he was driving and he rammed it at full speed, which, surprisingly enough, was enough to catapult him through the windscreen, where he got trapped upside down with his leg in the air between the lorry and the milk float that wouldn't stop. The float just kept ramming him and shattered his leg.
Actually, I'm not quite sure why I've always laughed at this story, probably because he later turned out to be a jealous knob, but whatever.

I'm convinced that one was a 2cv4 though, so he can knock him for that.

The only difference between the 2cv4 and 2cv6 is the engine size,
So whichever one he's putting them into, it's basically the same piece of sh*t, so you can't knock him for that! :)

Anyway Carry on

Exactly!
Total crumbling AND no speed! Perfec. Physics! ;) :D

On a serious note though, I protect my stuff adequately, if only so some helpful numptie doesn't damage it while trying to carry it through the door opening whilst banging it against the door frame. A recent experience of that type renewed my religious faith that people can't be bothered to take care.

My basses herefter will be in cases, simply because I feel cases are better when putting many basses on top of each other, and because cases can be at the bottom of the car's load area, whilst a bass in a gig bag would always be on top.
Last time I drove 2,000 miles with instruments, these were in gigbags on top of all other luggage, and not only could easily become projectiles, but also were visible to possible thieves.
This no more.

Whether a bass has been gigged or not isn't an issue for me. The bottom line is what sort of condition it's in.
You can easily wreck a bass without gigging it, and you can gig a bass up and down the country without throwing it under a bus.
