Hello..

Just looking for a bit of advice really..

I've been a four string pureist since I started playing however the time has come for me to branch out.. I'd really like a nice decent but cheap and giggable 5 string.. The main problem I've had with the 5 Strings I've tried (couple of Fender Squier V's and a Yamaha) is the string spacing is so small..

I'm use to playing a Stingray which has a hefty neck on it compared to the Fenders. What I'd really love is a Six String (becoming more and more of an Anthony Jackson addict every day at the moment) but I realise that for £300 that is probably quite a tall order!

Any ideas on cheap tidy 5 Strings? (Or Sixes if they're around!)

Cheers!

I know a guy with a Cort (I think) 6 string, thomann purchase I think, nice bass that looks very expensive but was within your budget I think.
The Tony Levin olp 5 string stingrays are nice if one pops up for sale but they have a slightly tighter spacing than an ebmm Ray 5.

How about a B-Stock Yamaha TRBX-305 in Pewter for £259? I've dealt with these folks in the past and had no issues.

I recently picked up an OLP MM3 5 string stingray for £150 which is what you seem to be looking for! Im told build quality may vary but generally if you get one as it should be, you have saved yourself at least about £700 compared to a full on Musicman equivalent! :)

My first 5Dr was a Peavey Millenium 5 AC BXP, goes for £289 (RRP:399) on GAK. It's a lot of bass for you buck :). Good neck nice weight. Very nice pick ups and electronics (18v rather than 9)

They also do a passive variant which goes for, I'm guessing £200-250 range

I have a Cort T35 that I love, it looks cool and sounds ace. I got mine for £220 used, though the previous owner only had it for 4 months before deciding Bass wasn't for him, it still had the selophane on the cavity cover and backs of the tuners. It has 17mm string spacing.

I would recommend giving one a try if you don't fancy one of the usual suggestions.

Check out Pro Music International in Ickenham (do mail order too) they have a couple of b-stock LTD 5 strings, one bolt on, one through neck.

http://www.promusicinternational.co.uk/

Not on their site, so give them a call maybe.

I'm surprised you think the Squier/Fenders have narrow string spacing, they are some of the chunkiest 5ers around. Definitely avoid Yamaha and Ibanez if you want a chunky neck.
