miles'tone
Been watching some old Led Zep vids today and noticed something interesting which reminded me of this topic being discussed here. I too always thought JPJ must be mistaken when he said he used Roto rounds even on the earlier tunes, when of course they sound like they're flats... Check out the beginning of this classic early days Dazed and Confused live vid. You can clearly see the stock Fender foam mutes still in situ on his jazz and they are very much engaged on the strings. So yeah, looks like the man himself was right all along.. Roto rounds for his preffered faster attack but with foam mutes heavily applied to give that flats-like fundamental and note decay. Plus he sure is plucking that bass right over the neck as some here previously suggested. Stands to reason he used this set up for what we've all heard on the recordings too I reckon. Love this vid, John Bonham is amazing here too. Edited October 24, 2013 by miles'tone

Stan_da_man
Dead rounds IIRC.
GarethFlatlands
I've seen a couple of vids of the mutes on a Jazz and it's pretty impressive the difference they make. Gave a very double bass sound on one them.
gjones
What a great all round sound on this video. It must have been remixed.

Mog
That is a damn fine tone. Do the big F still supply that bridge assembly? Couldn't spot one on the website.
King Tut
I ain't sure the footage matches the sound properly. Do you think the visuals might be from a different performance from the sound then edited to match?

Shame they're not adjustable though, looks like when they're on they stay on. If you could get the same kind of individual mutes but adjustable like the ones on the older Stingray bridges then I'd have them on in a shot. I decided to go down the highly technical route. Stuck some hard foam under the strings at the bridge.
