"Wot a splendid tierce picarde!" Do you ever say that sh*t?

I do :D I love a damn good picardy third.

I knew I loved em when I first heard the end of the piece in the video and later found out what it was called. I can hear them, they are like a bright light being turned on in the music, and that's when I go "Wot a splendidly superb tierce picarde!". I don't give a badger's nadgers how pretentious that exclamation sounds :)

Got any good examples to share?

Vai looks about 12 there!

Yeah I know :)

I got so much inspiration from that whole end guitar duel thing back in 1983 or whatever it was. That dancey one was wicked, Steve Vai is just so lyrical in that, his soloing is gorgeous! I got a visceral desire to play and practice from watching it.

Aye, been listening to a lot of Stevie recently. He has probably been my biggest influence as a musician in terms he really made me want to understand music scales, chords and harmony. You know all them things it's bad to learn. The first proper muso i got into. Found this the other day. You can really here all the nuances of his playing and musicality. It's just incredible.

Meh.. This just seems like w@nky nonsense from the '80's. Bad hair, bad clothes and ugly(well not the Tele) guitars. Lots of notes, but not much soul. I'd choose Billy Duffy over this any day.

Plus I've never seen Ry Cooder's name spelled with an extra 'e' before ...

Life was better before the Guitar Hero emerged. Page & Clapton have a lot to answer for.

I know a fair bit of theory, I use it in everything I play but, I have absolutely no idea what a tierce picarde is...
[/quote]
tierce de picardie is simply resolving a piece in a minor key on a major chord.

i.e if it's in Cminor you resolve it on C maj. It doesn't just have to be the end of the piece it can be any cadence within the piece.

just think of it as a happy third - in a nutshell a piece in a minor key resolving on the final cadence to the major

" Europa " is just a cycle round the circle of fifths in a minor key ( same as Autumn Leaves or Still Got The Blues For You ) , but starting on the iv chord .
ie iv, VII, III, VI, iidim , V , i
but the second time round it changes the i ( minor ) to I (major ) .
