No. In fact, almost the reverse. Been using a Stingray for some time now, when I hear the likes of 'Nard on his, I realise how poor is my own tone and playing.

Not so much with basses, but I've done something like this with other instruments and gear. I think it's a fairly normal part of thinking about how the instrument sounds and what you can do with it.

I'd say it's normal. Not so obvious for me though as I like P basses... that covers a lot of ground.

Plain psychology. Your ear is attracted to that particular tone so it is more aware of it. Quite normal.

By the time the recordings are mixed, bounced, compressed etc I find it quite hard to tell what bass is being played.

No, I don't do that. Whether or not it sounds good has more to do with the player (and the producer/engineer) than the bass in my opinion.
