Lowender Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Just got a delivery for a Squier77. Set it up. And it's going back. Like other VM's I've played, it's just a cheap instrument. And I SWEAR by the CV's. Love them! Think they're high quality instruments, as is the Squier J Deluxe. But every VM has been flawed. It LOOKED great! Gorgeous glossed maple fingerboard with white pearl inlays and white binding. It sounded pretty good too. But it just felt cheap. Tight. Couldn;t get the action low without buzzing. And I do set ups so that wasn't the problem. There is a tipping point where you can cut so many corners. And the VM seems to be it. It's not bad for a beginner, but for an extra few quid, go for the CV. it's so much better IMO. Quote

brensabre79 Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Maybe they've cut even more corners with these ones, I had one of the older ones with the satin finish neck. lovely little bass for under £250, but I agree all the bits on it feel a bit cheap - because they are. The only thing I have left unchanged is the neck, which is actually awesome. Quote

I prefer a narrower spacing on a 5 so this one suits me fine. Very inexpensive and sounds pretty damn good. It's mass produced though, some are always going to be crap and it's always been that way. If you didnt try any basses because they had one negative comment, you wouldn't have much choice. Quote

spongebob Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 I owned a VM Jazz for a day this year, bought as a backup. Quite simply, same as the OP, I returned it. Really nasty piece of firewood. Maybe I was unlucky, but it just felt horrible! Looked great, though. I wish Fender would use some of the VM/CV shades on the USA Standard range. Quote

Jimryan Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) Got to argue, I've had two VM's, a fretless jazz and a precision. Both have been amazing. The fretless went because it didn't get used and the precision is not going anywhere. I also have the jazz deluxe mentioned and it's equally as good. But, about getting the action low without buzzing... you know that's just because of some slightly uneven frets (something not that unusual even at instruments costing a fair bit more) and that it has a simple solution too, right? dave_bass5 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Ive got both CV's and a VM. IMO the VM feels cheaper than the CV's, but i cant put my finger on why as there are no issues with it. I think the CV's have much better necks, but the VMs arent too bad. My PJ neck has sharper edges, but no issues as such, its just the way its designed i guess. I have put my CV Jazz on my VM PJ and its really the ideal instrument for me. The VM feels lighter, and i do equate that to cheapness, but as far as fit and finish goes id say its equal to my 2 CV's. I have no issues gigging any of my Squiers, i gave up on more expensive basses a few years ago. Quote

dave_bass5 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I love my Squier VM, Its pretty much become my only bass now. I took the Fralin out of the CV P and took the neck off the CV Jazz lol. Now its not only lovely to look at, its very comfortable and familiar to play, with the tone ive been used to, and with the added Jazz growl/burp thrown in.
