This I don't understand. I'm the player I am never mind what band I'm in!

I the band insists on dictating the gear I use, and they're paying enough, then I'll change but not otherwise.

As in... "which bass will I take?". Nothing more philosophical than that. One tends to gravitate towards a particular bass. Well, I do anyway.

I keep thinking "I'm a five string player" and then the next year something (e.g. the band) changes and it's "I'm a four string player". I've always played both more-or-less interchangeably; I've never been sure what side of the fence I sit. Anyway, it's always an excuse to get new stuff if you change your mind.

I would not limit myself by ever having the frame of mind that "I am a 4 string player" or "I am a 5 string player". Why limit your options?

I am a bass player. The instrument that I decide to use is the tool that I have decided to deploy for the musical situation I am involved in.

I've been playing a 5 for 13 years only to discover I actually much prefer playing a 4 string. I have used the low B as fair bit, but in all honesty I play better on a 4. I kind of want to get rid of my last 5er but part of me thinks as I've only one of each now whether there is reason to or not. But I do play it and wish it had one string less, even though it sounds good.

I'm so fickle. Did one band practice just using a four. Turns out I massively missed the low B. It makes a better thumb rest than a pickup, my playing style is definitely better and I use low strings it far more than I realised..

Well... it's done! I've now sold my 4-strings (two in total). The last one gets couriered off tomorrow, so there's no going back.

That leaves me with one bass: a Peavey Cirrus BXP5; one in the making; and one I have my eye on ;)

Feels good. Less clutter at home and more room for instruments I'm going to be keen to play.

I might put together a 4 as a DIY Frankenbass project at some point in future. Until then I'm now 5's all the way.

I've been thinking more about this and I'm going to do the same.

I'm planning to end up with a pair of Marleaux 5 strings. So my 4 strings and my Dingwall ABZ5 will be going.

It will be a bit odd, but the Marleaux gets all my attention anyway. The others just sit there and look pretty!

I'll believe it when I see it!
