madshadows Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 So I'm playing my bass today and listening via headphones so I don't disturb the wife as she watches TV as I learn the riff to Rick James 'Superfreak' and she stops me and says "can you stop the grunting as you play", I am obviously doing this subconsciously to the riff as I play but I don't do it without headphones!, anyone else do this or is it just me being a SUPERFREAK? LOL John Quote
Thunderbird Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I have heard a similar story about wearing headphones you know the one where the lad is doing something with them on and his eyes shut then opens his eyes to find a cup of tea there lol bet he was grunting too bloody headphones hehe Quote
steve-bbb Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 could you be a bit more descriptive regarding the grunting and the we will be able to compare our own efforts but if you are some sort of bass playing sharapova then i think you might be in a very small minority Quote
Les Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Do you have the appropriate bassface to go with the grunting ? Quote
winterfire666 Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 i dont do it, thats just plain freaky (i dont think i do anyway) but i know someone who does, not just grunting but strange heavy breathing too, i dont think hes aware of it its not only very funny but a bit sinister too. oh yeah and he seems to do it with or without headphones although it is far more sinister (and louder) when he has them on. cameltoe Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I've been told I grunt when I do anything. People seemed to start commenting on this once I turned 30, so I can only deduce it's the classic 'dad' grunt. I don't even realise I'm doing it, although I occasionally catch myself when bending over to pick something up. I think it comes with age. Like back hair. Try not to fight it. Quote

scalpy Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Grunt, snort, heavy breathe, swear. bounce up and down, stamp foot, gurn, bite lip. Just in the groove, y'know!!! Quote

Myke Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 No, not something I do but I knew a drummer who has a very odd moan/groan when he plays.. It's kind of like he's on the loo! It's not quiet either.. Very loud! Quote
iconic Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Yup i'm a grunter too....and usually off key too! Quote

madshadows Posted November 2, 2013 Author Posted November 2, 2013 Well from some of the replies it seems I'm not alone in Grunt world!!, Grunters of the world unite John Quote
seashell Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 As long as you don't start doing it when lowering yourself into a chair, you're fine Quote
KingBollock Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I don't grunt but I do hold my breath while playing, which used to freak some people out because I can hold my breath for quite a long time. I tend to do it when concentrating in general, though, as though I can't breath and think at the same time. Which seems about right. Quote

Bassman Sam Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I was playing along to Queen's "I want to break free" with my headphones on when the ex wife was in the bath. I didn't reliese I was singing along to it. She jumped out of the bath and ran naked into the lounge as she thought someone was stabbing me. The sight still haunts me. Quote
chris_b Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Oscar Peterson "vocalised" very loudly when he played. It's a concentration thing. Quote
Norris Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Apparently I hum tunelessly while I'm playing. I have also had a recent habit of forgetting to breathe while I'm playing too Quote

matski Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I hum whilst playing. Never noticed it until I was 'laying down a track' wearing headphones in the control room of a studio and the rest of the band were giggling at me. Always wondered why my teeth were vibrating when playing.... Quote
