Thebassman75 Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 HI I hope I've got the right forum for this, if not, please re-direct. I took this old jazz pickup out of my 65 P-Bass. Obviously it's been retro-fitted but the cloth wire but the condition seems to point at it being 'original', in terms of maybe being fitted early in the life of the bass.. Is it an original Fender pickup or is it something else? Many thanks in advance for your help Quote
Chiliwailer Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The bevelled ends of the pole pieces, laquer and burgundy colour wire suggest that this is original. Fender changed to grey bottom pickups in 1964 but some black bottom pickups were used until up to around '67 so it may not be out of place in a '65 bass. Could be an original, best to locate pictures of others and do a 'spot the difference'. Andy Baxters website may be a good point of reference for pictures. Good luck Quote
Thebassman75 Posted November 3, 2013 Author Posted November 3, 2013 Great, thanks. Does anyone have any weblinks for comparisons? I've done a google search but not much comes up.. Quote

[/quote] http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=516 http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=444 There's a coupe from AB's site with black bottom pickups. His site has excellent pictures of the gear he's selling. Identifying these is mostly down to experience too and looking for the finer details. Knowing the history of the bass can also help work it out, but it does look like an old one to me. Quote
Thebassman75 Posted November 3, 2013 Author Posted November 3, 2013 Yes, it certainly looks the same and the age would put it about right. I'm having the bass it came from restored to the original so this is surplus to requirements. Might pop it onto Ebay and see what happens.. Thanks Quote
Chiliwailer Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Just so you know mate, these can go for very good money as they are hard to locate. Some sellers in the States have them at amazingly high prices due to the rarity and desirability of a pickup from the golden era of Fender. Good luck! Quote
