Can 110v amps be modified so they don't need step down transformers?

Most amp use an internal rail voltage which is much lower than the mains supply and thus have some sort of internal power supply to reduce and smooth the voltage. If you amp has a transformer as part of its internal power supply then this could probably be replaced with one that works with 240 volts, if it is a modern one with a switched mode supply then it might still be possible as some of these have a way of configuring the input voltage. Youd need to get an engineer to look at it.

I bought a small us fender guitar amp at a boot sale once and replaced the transformer on it.
