Can 110v amps be modified so they don't need step down transformers?

Considering getting something over from the states, but not super keen on lugging a step down transformer around with me everywhere I go. Can they be modded to take 240v?

Depends - some amps have a switch that you can select the voltage, otherwise you are looking at changing out the power transformer. Depends what you are looking at. Valve stuff, you are likely to be shafted.

Most amp use an internal rail voltage which is much lower than the mains supply and thus have some sort of internal power supply to reduce and smooth the voltage. If you amp has a transformer as part of its internal power supply then this could probably be replaced with one that works with 240 volts, if it is a modern one with a switched mode supply then it might still be possible as some of these have a way of configuring the input voltage. Youd need to get an engineer to look at it.

I bought a small us fender guitar amp at a boot sale once and replaced the transformer on it.

What are you thinking of getting?

IMO, unless you are importing something rare or unique there is little point in going to the expense and potential trouble of buying an amp from the US.
