DiMarco
Don't let anyone tell you what is good for rock and what is not. Anyone who attempts to is clearly more of an asshole then he will ever be a musician.
pierreganseman
well..... many players have proved that freltess can fit anything if played right.... many people have proved to be ass holes over the years..... Telebass
I played a fretless P, inspired by the guy in Peter Frampton's band, for years in an ordinary rock context. It was just a bass. With no frets...I now have another and will doubtless do the same again!

Marc S
I'm think jason newstead used a fretless on several recordings. Enough said really....
+1 to that!

risingson
The fretless sounded just fine this evening mate! Great job, nice and prominent out front, not overpowering at all either.
gjones
Maybe the assistant MD read this interview with Boz Burrell, Bad Company's bass player. BB: [pauses] No. Not really. No. I’m not a retrospective sort of person. I don’t really go back and delve. I sometimes hear something, like “Can’t Get Enough” and think, “Jesus. I should never have played a fretless bass on that. The pitch is so out of tune.” So I can only look at something as a piece of work, if you know what I mean. Not as something I did or didn’t enjoy. I just listen to it and go, “Ooh, sh*t.” BM: That fretless bass. Yeah. I remember seeing pictures of you in Circus Magazine back then playing that fretless bass. That looked really difficult. Did you think so, or was it easy to play? BB: Oh, well, that’s a story, that is. That comes down to that was Esther Philips’ bass player. A New York guy. What was his name? It’s gone out of my head. Hmm. Gordon Edwards! The bass player. Used to have this lovely style which I used to try and emulate it. It always sounded like a fretless bass, so I went and bought myself a fretless. It wasn’t until about four years later that I met him and he said, “No, I never played a fretless in my life.” [laughs] BB: [laughs] I thought, “sh*t!” He never played one! It was just the way he played a fretted one. [laughs] Edited November 12, 2013 by gjones
