Anyone built a their own bass from a kit or from scratch?

I have a couple of bass's and Ibanez and a fender jazz but am interested in building my own

Seen a few kits on ebay and the web but not sure how good these will be, I have built a cigar box guitar earlier this year from scratch. shaping the neck, cutting in the frets etc so building a bass from a kit should be a bit easier. The paintig is probably the hardest part for me, although I have a compressor, paint gun and airbrush kit (never tried it out!!)
Anyone have any kit recommendations or "must avoid"
