Jobiebass Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I love love love them, ChrisDaBass put them on the Stringray before selling it to me and ive been hooked on them ever since. Just got my 4eq HS Bongo this afternoon, not loving the ernie balls on it so gonna get some elixirs, BUT Gauge??? Ive tralled thru the strings sticky but either im reading it wrong or its contridicting itself. I read Lighter gauge strings have to be tighter to get the note, I would have thought opersite but Im a noob or I wouldnt be here. Also ligher strings are better for slap/tapping, which someone then said the mediums are better. anyways, Im gonna get some new ones for my Stringray, which im sure were 45-100 if im not mistaken (chrisdabass can prob inform me) and I want some for my bongo, I guess im getting the 45-100 then a 125??? 130 is standard, but id like it to be tighter, nothing worse then a floppy B string. I play finger style and attempt to slap so if someone could help me id be more then greatful Quote
bass_ferret Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I only need 4 strings and cant be arsed to work out the gauges but bass strings are usually measured by the G string (same as thin strings are measured by the top E) so think about it this way - tune your A string down to E - thats the effect of going from 50's (very heavy 50 70 90 110) to 30's (very light 30 50 70 90). ped Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I love them too - had the same set on for over a year now and they still sound like new! Quote
Jobiebass Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 any clue on which gauge I should get for a tight low B? Quote
The Legoheads Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Love them on my guitars (6 string) but not sure on my bass... Quote
BigRedX Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I've never tried them on any of my basses because the guitarist in my current band use them on their guitars and I can honestly say I haven't come across a nastier guitar string that wasn't bargain basement prices. That's pretty much put me off. Quote

ped Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 The heavier the string the tighter it will be. I have a .130 B brand new here if you would like it, just PM me your details. Cheers ped P.s - some people find the coating 'flakes' around the playing area but mine have never done this, I guess it is down to your technique (plectrum or not etc) and weather you sweat and so on. I love the fact that I no longer have to worry about dead strings which, for me, really really sap the enjoyment out of playing! P.p.s - worth noting that Elixir strings are patented - other makes like Diddario(sp?) and Warwick coat the string before wrapping it which essentially means there is crud in the string before you even put them on. Elixir coat afterwards so nothing gets in the windings at all. Quote
OldGit Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I use lights with a .125 (Taper wound) on my B string and it's perfect. I also get them from a bloke in the US who can sell them and ship them here for less than the UK string people can sell them for... Last ages but do get hairy bits where I pick them but that's usually around thetime to change them anyway .... BigRedX: That's a really, really pants reason to not try something Quote

At some point I really ought to give them a good, but the guitar strings have been so horrible that it's really put me off. Maybe I'll get a set next time I restring one of the 4-stringers and see what I think. Quote

ped Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Yep - in fact probably more than I thought. Mind you i don't sweat hardly at all, but i still managed a pack of Elites every few weeks before I switched. They are the cheapest strings you can buy - expensive at first, but the savings over time are immense. Quote

I pick, have terrible technique but don't sweat much and I want that new sound for as long as I can. I am sorely tempted to get a pack, on top of a normal Ernie Ball order, to give 'em a try. Quote

warwickhunt Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Unfortunately string tension and gauge aren't as easy to assess as you think and I wouldn't just go off the string diameter either! Below are some stats for D'Addario bass strings (lifted straight from their site as I'd just been looking at them) and as you can see from the first 2 sets the G string on the .040 Superlights is significantly less than the G (.035) on the Extra Supers. However... if you go to the G on the heavies (0.55) it is almost triple / double the tension of the other two sets but the difference between the E strings is not as great as any of the others.
