sarah thomas
Thanks to both! Arvell Shaw is just amazing. And while Leroy Vinnegar's 'Leroy Walks Again' is difficult to find, his quartet's 'Leroy Walks' is on amazon as an mp3 download for £2.59. That's my Saturday morning sorted then. ubassman
Dan Berglund - for making the complex appear simple...immaculate timing, versatility, and just the vibe he brings to the music ! Not found a single defining clip but love his work with EST http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gXhwv9_ZS0

fatback
Ray Brown all the way for me. I heard on one recording Peterson introducing him as a genius. I ask you; how good do you have to be for Oscar Peterson to call you a genius? Not short of confidence is Mr. Brown. Would you indulge in a little casual percussion over the great man's solo piano? Most would hesitate, but not our Ray. Bass comes in at 2.30. BetaFunk
As a fan of Albert Ayler i've loved this for over 40 years and still amazes me. The rhythm section don't really know what to make of Albert and his much more free style than they are used to but they stick with it and the brilliant Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen's bowed solo at 6.00 is a joy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYsQ2Nwe54U Edited November 16, 2013 by BetaFunk
BetaFunk
I would have paid to hear Scott LaFaro wash dishes. He was a genius. I have nearly all of his recorded work and this is interesting as most recordings you hear (unless you are a fan) are with Bill Evans or Ornette but anything by Scotty is well worth a listen. timbass
Scott LaFaro = amazing, thanks. I do love Raymond Matthews Brown - such cool. Thanks for sharing folks. Is it just my ignorance, but don't jazz bass solo pieces played above the octave mostly sound like a demented bee caught in a jam jar? Even Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen brilliance up there leaves me cold.
mtroun
My favourite bass players are (too lazy to find youtube videos for all but my favourite work of theirs is in brackets): Sam Jones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU1s3IjhM3w (there's probably some great Cannonball vids out there too!) Ron Carter (w/ Miles and Joe Henderson) Buster Williams (w/Herbie Hancock and Kenny Barron)

geoffbassist
That great Jimmy Garrison video made me think of this short video interview with the late Art Davis who played along side Jimmy Garrison on John Coltrane's album Ascension. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1737726083/channeling-coltrane-a-concert-video-of-electric-as/posts/260867
Rabbie
In terms of sheer influence on popular music, slapping, songwriting and general bad-boyness, gotta be Willie Dixon for me http://youtu.be/UcqqyL-Y6Go

I think it's when the soloist works off the melody or melodies. Otherwise it's just finger wiggling, and not a very nice sound (pizz) either. timbass
Aaaw thanks guys, so many new greats for me to listen to. And the advice too. How many more great talents are there? I did miss out Esperanza Spalding because she is an obsession in looks and sound. A dangerous combination. Much respect to all those who responded. What a great chat site this is! geoffbassist
I have 3 jazz guys who I listen to all the time. John Patitucci, Christian Mcbride and Larry Grenadier. Here's some of my favourite video clips. John Patitucci is the man! Check this out. http://youtu.be/JK9Vzdjtxtg Christian McBride. There are endless videos of him playing jaw droping solos. He has it all. Great feel, technique, a unique voice on the instrument. Check out his crazy fill at 05:19. I just love his positive vibes! http://youtu.be/LZaAdtJH6JY There are a lot of other guys who I love listening to but heres todays top 3.... :-)
