I've just purchased a nice silver series sunburst p bass and I wanted to give it a light relic look, does anyone know what the body wood is? I'm guessing the answer is 'basswood' but it feels so light! I just wondered if anyone would have an insight as to how it would relic? I would just like to dull the gloss finish with some minor sanding like a road worn, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Arghhhh why did i forget to say: "please don't say gig it for 20yrs"etc etc

If it's a Silver Squier it's already had 20 years worth of gigging.

Doesn't take 20 years either mate. 2 years gigging (and playing) will take its inevitable toll... depending on how many gigs you do a year I guess.

It's basswood. Basswood doesn't have much in the way of a grain, so don't go too nuts with the sanding.

Hey thanks, that's kinda what I thought, I'm undecided at the mo as its in really good condition, just thought I'd put
the question out there, I wouldn't touch the neck just the body

The problem you have is poly doesn't really age gracefully like Nitro. That's why it still looks good 20 years on. Poly either looks brand new, or has chunks taken out of it. You won't get a convincing worn 'Road Worn' look with a poly finish.

Thenk's for all your help guys, I'll mull over it for a bit, it's got no routing so I might make up a small pick guard for the controls, it'll kinda match my 62RI Japan fretless jazz!
