obbm Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013
The beauty of the Auralex is that it's reasonably well made, has a useful little grab handle and feels like it won't fall apart.
I find this quite funny as the only thing that's broken on mine is the handle. "Just came away in my hand Officer" Quote

icastle Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 The only complaint I have with mine is that you have to put it exactly where you want it because, by the time it's got cabs and an amp sat on top of it, you can't move it. Quote
chris_b Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 The cost of a Gramma pad is not much when you consider that it will stop a bad stage from nullifying the fantastic tone you get out of your expensive rig. Quote
RJB280 Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 Ok everyone, thanks for your feedback, very helpful and in the main V positive. Even a kind offer from obbm to try before i buy which is brilliant and typical of the generosity of bass players everywhere ! Quote
sifi2112 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 My cab has castors (hard rubber wheels) so guessing it won't work on it unless I lay it on its side ? Quote
Muzz Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I use a couple of pieces of that knobbly acoustic foam, works just as well (and it's a great idea to isolate the cab from hollow stages), cost beans and is as hard to transport as, well, a square foot of foam. Having said that, I use a small, light cab and head (38lb 2x15 Schroeder), so it works fine, it probably wouldnt work as well under a stack or a Peavey 410... Quote
chris_b Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I don't know the weight limits of home made ones, but the Auralex Gramma is good to 300lbs. Quote
Paul S Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I bought the 'Studio Spares' own brand equivalent, which was cheaper. Struggling to find it on their website at the moment, though. But it is invaluable - probably the single cheapest improvement in your sound you can make. Quote
Used to be in a band where the drummer would turn up late and then insist I move my fully set up rig (on the gramma pad) about 6" one way or another and I'd have to break it down and do it again. Lasted 6 months in that one Quote
chris_b Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I'd pace out the drummer's space and give him that on subsequent gigs and refuse to move. I've been in bands when I've turned up last and found they haven't left any room on stage for the bass! That's happened more than once! Quote
ratman Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I've had one for a few weeks now. I've done maybe a dozen gigs, and it's been amazing. My tone is a bit tighter and there's a bit of woolyness gone down in the deep end. Lots of band members have commented on the difference which surprised me as I already use good quality gear. I won't play without it now. Quote
It'll work fine with castors on - the idea is to isolate the cab from the floor and, being on castors, the surface area involved is significantly reduced anyway. Quote

jonsmith Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 At first, it probably seems quite costly against what you physically get, but then it turns out to be more than worth the money in any venue with a hollow stage/floor. Quote
rubis Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Cheers, how this does the foam need to bee? Quote

FlatEric Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 This is from a previous post on this subject - this is what mine looks like, for not many $$$$
I made this one from Platfoam. If the material you use to seperate the cab from the floor is too thin/hard, it will still transfer sound. If the foam is too soft there's a chance your cab and amp will easily be knocked over!! This works a treat and was covered in another Gramma thread.
