RhysP Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Bloody hell, with the amount of godawful "novelty" songs being posted as examples of good covers in this thread I'm surprised nobody has posted a clip of the Barron Knights yet. Quote
DiMarco Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 When we want to change a song's feel we usually first play the structure of it to a different rhythm, in a different tempo. This will make you automatically come up with another bass groove or even a whole different bass line in the same key. Jam till its phat and whoop there it is. Quote

[/quote] I was going to mention this in my original post (not the Barron Knights bit) that a lot of 'quirky'covers and the bands that turned them into their own style (Hayseed Dixie and Dread Zep spring to mind) soon do in fact start to sound like novelty bands. I think with those, both bands were always playing it firmly tongue in cheek though so it fitted that 'cabaret' ethos. Always liked Nazareth's vs of This Flight though I don't think Joni was overly impressed. Edited November 21, 2013 by KevB Quote
Roland Rock Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Señor Coconut's version of Sade's 'Smooth Operator' Some may see this as novelty song, but if think it's a top quality interpretation: http://youtu.be/zke6WpWzwd4 Quote
flyfisher Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Surprised no one has posted clips of JJ Cale songs being covered, most of which would probably be better known than the originals. But here's a favourite cover of mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUYo8PeO96g Quote

Norris Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Our guitar-bass-drums trio often does "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago. Whatever you do with that line-up it's going to have a different spin... Quote

Danny Thompson's on about 5 of them. Usually the bands were fabulous, AK on the other hand was patchy at best. Quote
BigRedX Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Lots of examples but little in the way of practical advice. Surely there more be more people on here who have done something a bit different with the songs they have covered? Quote
razze06 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) We've recently started doing Tainted Love in a swingy shuffle sort of way. No recordings of it yet, but an immediate hit with the punters. Interesting bassline possibilities, if you dare to venture past the 7th fret It all happened when mucking about in the practice room, trying to avoid having to make the "original vs softcell" decision. I just started playing an uptempo walking bass line, and the singer just started singing just like the original. It just clicked and we just added a jazz guitar solo at the end Edited November 21, 2013 by razze06 Quote

gelfin Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Once did Summer of 69 with three part operatic style vocals, bass and Taurus bass pedals.!!!!! Took the audience all of verse 1 to realise what song it was, but when it dawned on them we got a great cheer with many trying to join in. Quote
