I'm selling my German flatback as I've just bought a new bass. I believe it to have been made in the 1940s. I've had it about 8 years; I got it from the Bradford based luthier Lily Bennett who rescued it from a school and gave it a full restoration (including removal of a very old piece of flapjack). While in the school it was clearly somewhat mistreated and is rather beaten up cosmetically as you can see in the photos. There are signs of a couple of old cracks on the back which don't move at all so will have been repaired properly by Lily. The neck is thinner than most so may suit players with smaller hands.

In July last year I got to a lesson to find the neck had come off, likely due to it being in the car on a scorching day and maybe taking a knock. The repair was done by Kai Dase who also fitted a new ebony finger board, bridge, tailpeice and spike.

All in all, due to the distressed/mojo loaded look of the bass you get a lot for your money. Anyone who knows Lily or Kai knows their work is top notch and Kai has said to insure the bass for £6000.

I'm after £2500 which includes a good quality, well padded soft case. I fitted a new set of medium tension D'Addario Helicore Hybrids about six months ago.

You can hear the bass on 'Dead Weight' and 'The Bone Orchard' by Gavin Davenport on Spotify.
