BassTractor
This may be easy or hard, I don't know, but the seller says it's unique. Wanna have a go? I'll get back with the seller's answer. JapanAxe
Not a clue but that is a truly hideous bass in so many ways!

BigRedX
The pickup would suggest an Aria Pro II of some description, but none of the rest of it does. I'm intrigued.
geoffbyrne
The shoulders & general fitting of the pickup is very like my old Westone Thunder IIIb. G.
bartelby
The black neck and pickup suggest some kind of Westone to me.
BigRedX
Probably something form the Matsumoku factory then.
JapanAxe
The red(-ish) binding and black hardware suggest Washburn. Edited November 23, 2013 by JapanAxe

Beer of the Bass
The neck looks on the narrow side for a five string. Has it been converted from a four? I'm sure I've seen that red and black binding before on a black finished bass, but I can't remember what it was...
BassTractor
Me, I feel strangely attracted to it, and wouldn't mind being seen with it in a live setting. Here are some disclosing pictures. Below them are the seller's claim about it: OK, so seller says it's an eighties Vox 5-string that lacks a name on the headstock, but was once presented in a leaflet together with the 4-string White Shadow models (fretted and fretless) that did have the name on the headstock. After that leaflet, the 5-string was never taken into regular production, according to the seller. Some people on the Dutch bass forum, like some here, commented on PU, headstock and black neck, and it was thought that this bass must have been built by Westone. Me, I wouldn't know. I just liked the thing.
LukeFRC
I've seen that before somewhere. Can't remember where

BigRedX
There were several Japanese 5-string basses with narrow necks in the 80s. I had a Washburn with 15.5mm string spacing. And IIRC they also produced a black bass with red binding... And there apparently were some Matsumoku made Washburn branded instruments. Where are Bassassin and Noelk27 when you need them? LukeFRC
ahhh, I used to have the body of a box standard so that's where I would have seen it! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/vox-white-shadow-879564/
BigRedX
And AFAICS made for Vox by Matsumoku.
Bassman68
My first fretless was a '86 Vox white shadow in black, seeing the body shape in this post I instantly thought 'Vox' although never recall a 5 string version available in the '80s or with a humbucking pick-up. Mine had a standard Dimarzio P-bass pick-up in roughly the 'Stingray' sweetspot with a small coil tap switch. Not a bad little bass overall. This bass looks an interesting option to me, the binding looking very 80s Washburn?...
Bassassin
Late to the party on this one - and I do like that a lot, hideous or otherwise! Dunno if I'd've twigged it was an MIJ Vox but not surprised seeing the logo. Never seen one of these before and tbh had no idea there was ever an MIJ Vox 5er. It's reckoned these came from Matsumoku, I'd say confirmed by the fact the Vox 24 guitar was pretty much the same instrument as the Westbury Standard guitar, and the Vox neck-through basses are very, very Aria-esque. As has been mentioned, a number of similarities to late Westones, I'd be inclined to put this around 1986/7, that being when Matsumoku packed in instrument manufacture. Jon. BN3Bassman
I'm a bit late adding to this post but.... It is definitely a 1980's VOX White Shadow. Not sure if the 5th string was added later as I haven't seen a 5er. I used to have one, I lent it out about 9 years ago, then he lent it to someone else and it hasn't been seen since. If anyone sees one, it's fretless, black with orange trim. It too has a fitted case with a gold fleece lining, please let me know as I would love to find it and possible get it back (though I know there isn't much chance). Thanks
alyctes
Vox White Shadow was my first guess. OTOH I'm too ignorant to know if there were fives, or buckers...
